The Greatest Hits has an interesting and unique premise involving music and time travel, but despite the ambition of the story its production was contained to filming locations in and around L.A. County. That down-home feel adds something to the romance, which feels bound to a certain place, even if it doesn’t always play by the rules of time.

I’ve rounded up some interesting details about the production, but if you’re interested in the film itself you can read our overall thoughts in our review and find out why the ending annoyed us so much in our ending explained.

Filming Locations Explained

The Greatest Hits was shot in various locations across Los Angeles County, California. The film was always going to use L.A. as its setting, and would also premiere at El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood.

Locals would no doubt be able to spot a few of the more well-known locales feature. Celebmafia would feature some pictures of the cast filming in Silver Lake, a small community in the east-central region of Los Angeles, California.

Keen-eyed location spotters will also be able to see Echo Park Lake, another key location for the shoot.

Production Timeline

In an interview with Elle, the director of the film, Ned Benson, explained that he had originally thought of the idea as far back as 2008. He explained that he would keep it on the back burner, and around 2020, the story would return to him, with him feeling more able to work on the feature after letting it settle for over a decade,

“I think I also needed more heartbreak, more relationships, [and] more experience to really make sense of what this movie was about, which is that we have the capacity in our hearts to love more than one person.”

Once the project was officially green-lit, Searchlight would acquire the rights in August 2022, allowing filming to take place from August to October 2022.

It would be a while before post-production finished and a release date for the film’s premiere was announced on March 14th, 2024. The Greatest Hits would receive a limited release in theatres on April 5th, then dropped on Hulu on April 12th, 2024.

The Director Behind The Greatest Hits

The Greatest Hits was written and directed by Ned Benson. Ned does not have a lot of directing credits to his name and had worked on some short-form films including Four Lean Hounds, Yes, and The Westerner.

However, Ned is also a producer and writer, and you will have seen his name on projects such as the superhero spin-off Black Widow. With the music being a major driving force in the film, it is no surprise that Ned would work closely with talents such as Nelly Furtado, Mary Ramos, and DJ Harvey to create the perfect score.

What music is used in The Greatest Hits?

Ryan Lott supplies the bulk of the music for the soundtrack, but there are also several older tracks that plenty of you out there will recognize.

Music comes from Roxy Music, Nelly Furtado, Leon Haywood, and Peggy Lee is also there with a remastered version of Me and My Shadow.
