Authenticity is baked into every aspect of Deliver Me, including its setting. The Netflix series, which tells a harrowing crime story adapted from the novel by Malin Persson Giolito, was filmed on location in Stockholm, Sweden, where the author herself is from.

The series was filmed in and around Stockholm, Sweden. Stockholm is the country’s capital and has pretty much every location that the showrunners would need to bring the story to the small screen.

Deliver Me‘s story is a very intense look at the social circumstances of the characters, so authenticity was a must. Buildings and streets had to feel mundane and real, and the same thought process was applied to the cast, who had no previous credits.

It’s worth noting that the book’s author hails from an area of Stockholm called Djursholm, often considered a more affluent neighborhood. Writers often use their own real-life experiences when creating their work, so there is no doubt that she would have used her town when crafting the story.

Changing the names of the areas for the work allows the writer to write without constraint, and also does not allow the reader, who may know the real location, to have pre-conceived images of the location. Her life there would allow her a perspective for the novel, that she would juxtapose by contrasting it with more run-down areas in the city, and by creating fictionalized counterparts, it makes the narrative more accessible.

Production Timeline Explained

Here’s how Deliver Me made it to our screens:

  • The novel was first published in February 2022 and was well received, leading to it getting noticed by various production companies.
  • Previously, Netflix had some success adapting a novel by the same author, which we will explore later, so by June 2nd, 2022, Netflix announced that they were going to adapt the book for a TV series.
  • By February 2023, filming would start on the show, and Netflix would aim for a 2024 release.
  • With everything on schedule, a trailer for Deliver Me dropped on March 18th, 2024.
  • Deliver Me was released globally on Netflix on April 24th, 2024.

Who produced Deliver Me?

Deliver Me was produced by Frida Asp and Fatima Varhos, working for their own independent and Swedish-based company, Asp Varhos. The company was established in 2021 and is also behind shows such as Barracuda Queens and Love and Anarchy, which is now on its second season.

Deliver Me is not the first adapted work of Malin Persson Giolito

Giolito was also behind the novel Quicksand which Netflix would also adapt into a series back in 2019. The story is similar in tone to Deliver Me and covers the disturbing narrative behind a murder that happens at a high school.

Giolito would state that she was happy with the adaptation, no doubt leading to her involvement in the Deliver Me project. However it appears that this time around, things would not go well. Giolito would have her name removed from the adaptation, and it was reported that this was due to her disagreements with the screenwriter of the series, Alex Haridi.
