WARNING: THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS

The end of Tokyo Swindlers Season 1 did not desperately show a need for Season 2, but it did leave story strands that will have audiences wondering what may happen next.

With plenty of dead bodies along the way, Takumi discovered a haunting truth. The crime boss he works for, Harrison, was the man behind his family’s demise. His family business getting land swindled was why he got into the business in the first place, leading to working for the violence-thirsty Harrison.

Police detective Kuramochi successfully unearthed a vast conspiracy around this group of land swindlers by the end of Season 1. It involved Takumi confessing all the crimes that took place, including the tactics that Harrison used. We assume Takumi gets a reduced sentence for cooperating.

However, the ending also suggests crime boss Harrison Yamanaka is alive as he’s seen hunting in the snowy wilderness. Either this was metaphoric to suggest he was finally hunted, and a flashback was used to highlight his demise, or he was alive.

Considering how specific the story of Tokyo Swindlers is, I believe he’s alive, which means we have to ask ourselves, what’s next?

From a story perspective, Tokyo Swindlers Season 2 is possible with the existing characters. However, I suspect things will be different this time. First, it is implausible that Harrison will commit land fraud in Tokyo again. Why would he after he’s truly exposed? Plus, everyone likely thinks he’s dead after the grenade explosion in the Season 1 finale.

Second, because Takumi has confessed everything and cooperated with the police, his life in crime could be over. However, he’s a smart character, and his intelligence can be used. It’s possible that Takumi could partner with Kuramochi as an intel asset. Once Takumi learns that Harrison is alive, he will be determined to find him to get the revenge he seeks. You also have to understand the psychological damage that Takumi is going through after the events of Season 1. As Kuramochi stated, he hurt a lot of people, and the toll that must have on his personality that ultimately led to nothing must be heavy and painful.

After learning that Harrison killed one of her colleagues, Kuramochi will also have some demons to contend with. Her desire to bring this man down will be equally strong, and even though she disagrees with Takumi’s measure of morals, she’ll need to team up with him for an equal cause.

This brings me to my final point: the second season of Tokyo Swindlers could be in an entirely different city or country, as one user pointed out on our Ready Steady Cut Reddit:

This would make sense as Harrison forms a new team and continues to swindle land. Takumi would have all the knowledge to track him down with Kuramochi. However, would this mean that the second season would have an entirely new series title — Osaka Swindlers, anyone?

It would make less sense if the series moved to another country, as that would mean less involvement from Kuramochi unless she worked directly with Interpol. Or Harrison has a new story entirely like the user above in the Ready Steady Cut Reddit presumed.

It’s also not outside the realm of possibility that Tokyo Swindlers Season 2 remained in Tokyo, and Harrison secretly pulled the strings. From a writing perspective, that could work.

Either way, I’d love to hear others’ opinions on what Season 2 could be about, so please comment with your theories below.
