There was a time when the dystopian thriller series Snowpiercer looked canceled, so it’s a miracle that Season 4 has made it to our screens at all. What’s more, is that for the first time, the action is not contained to the carriages of the titular train, and instead has outdoor scenes filmed largely in Canada.

Let’s take a look at the filming locations and unlikely return of Snowpiercer Season 4 in more detail.

Filming Locations

Earlier seasons of Snowpiercer were filmed in British Columbia, and with a border close to Alaska, the conditions are perfect. However, specific locations are a little bit harder to decipher.

Previous seasons would utilize the sound stages in Martini Studios in Langley, so we can assume that the fourth season would also use of the studio for many scenes.

Vancouver is also named as a primary filming location, and Inside Vancouver covers the story of the filming, beginning in 2017.

Production Timeline

As far as the filming was concerned, the camera would start rolling for the fourth season of Snowpiercer on March 28th, 2022, and would wrap on August 6, 2022. However, the announcement for the fourth series would be made way back on July 29th, 2021. It was also stated that this would indeed be the final run of episodes.

In January 2023, TNT dropped a bombshell, stating that they would not be airing the show, leading to a furious search for a new network.

AMC would jump in and announced in March 2024 that they would be showing the fourth season. As fans of the franchise cheered, AMC would also state that the show would air in 2025. However, for unknown reasons, this air date would be changed quite dramatically. July 21st, 2024 was confirmed as the date for Season 4.

On June 4th, 2024, a teaser would drop followed by a trailer on June 20th.

The restructured schedule has muddied the waters as far as the production dates were concerned, and there were reports of the show being aired even earlier in Europe. Apparently, the show dropped early in Belgium, and the reasons for this have not been divulged. We can only assume that the show had faced an upward battle to get to its final season and the change from TNT to AMC, and the cancellation by Warner Brothers may have been behind some of the decisions made.

Was Snowpiercer nearly canceled?

Snowpiercer was canceled after Season 3, and the show has faced some controversy, unfortunately falling under the axe of the Warner Brothers tax write-offs.

TNT was owned by Warner Brothers Discovery who began a ruthless cost-cutting strategy that led to many properties being canceled.

Snowpiercer would be saved by AMC who would rescue the show at the eleventh hour. Other productions would not be so lucky, most notably the pretty much finished Batgirl film that was allegedly completed and never shown.

Fans should be thankful that Snowpiercer Season 4 ever made it to air.
