Things are boiling over as we reach the end of One Fast Move. Wes has lost a good woman in Camila, who disapproves of his past and how he fought with another racer, stooping to his father’s level. After all, she has a young son and needs a man she can trust to be around him.
And then you have Wes’s relationship with his father, Dean, who abandoned him when he was a child. The father and son have it out with each other, and Wes claims he is no longer scared of him. This is the kind of theme we’ve seen in film and TV, where the son finally achieves dominance over his father.
What did the final race mean for Wes and Dean?
The last race of the One Fast Move was an intense one. Before the race, Dean apologizes to his son for being a “deadbeat dad”. But his son has also inspired him, so he adds himself to the roster in the final race.
As the race reaches the final laps, Wes and Dean are neck and neck, but Wes shows great bravery in the final corner to overtake his father. Dean is overwhelmed by this move, crashes out, and Wes wins the race.
At this point, I expected Dean to lash out at Wes, but he smiled at his son and acknowledged him. His father is proud of him. On the other hand, Wes has shown he’s finally worthy of responsibilities—a man worthy of being on a race track and being a stepfather to Camila’s son. He doesn’t need his father, but he needs to have these moments with him to prove their past will not hinder him.
And so, Wes and Dean finally bonded. And it could only be that they did this by racing each other.
Do Wes and Camila end up together?
You can understand why Camila was considering ending her romance with Wes. His criminal record and thirst for violence were not a good match for a single mother who wanted to find a man who deserved to be a stepfather to her child.
But I think she knew Wes was struggling with his relationship with his father, and in the end, she clearly put aside recent issues and gave Wes a chance. In the end scenes of One Fast Move, we see Wes and Camila kissing on the race track, confirming that they ended up together.
It would have been an awful ending if she had stuck with her decision and never spoken to Wes again. He wouldn’t have deserved that.
