The third act of Mission: Cross has a lot riding on it, but it’s worth the symbolic ending for the husband and wife.
As the film establishes, Kim Jung-san is missing after trying to blow the whistle on the Ministry of National Defense after learning of procurement fraud with misappropriated defense funds. Park Kang-mu, along with Hee-ju (a former agent he used to work with), is trying to find Kim Jung-san, who is apparently held captive by General Park, who is behind the fraudulent crime.
On the sidelines, Kang Mi-seon, the wife, is tracking down her husband, believing he’s partaking in an affair, but soon realizes there’s more to her investigation when Baek Seon-u wakes up in the hospital. She was trying to take down General Park herself before she was attacked — she was trying to stop him from getting the file that had all the required information to launder the fraudulent money.
Who is the real villain in Mission: Cross?
As we reach the end scenes of Mission: Cross, we learn that Hee-ju is behind the procurement fraud and she is the “last boss” villain. She wants to launder a large amount of money for herself in a high-risk crime with other government officials.
Eventually, she gets the location of the file from Kim Jung-san after he gives the information to Kang-mu. Mi-seon also figured out the conspiracy from this point in the movie, and she finds the file and destroys it. Before doing so, she puts all the information on her phone. Mi-seon is then captured and put in Hee-ju’s torture chamber.
The husband and wife work together to bring down Hee-ju
Mi-seon never respected her husband, but she will now. She’s in shock at how resourceful he is, how he can handle a gun and fight. He’s a former spy, after all. When she learns her husband used to be an agent as part of an Intelligence Agency, she’s initially angry and shocked but also equally impressed. It does not take her long to warm to the new side of her husband.
The latter phase of the movie sees Kang-mu desperate to save his wife while bringing down Hee-ju. Before he saves her, his wife has to give the file to Hee-ju to stop her from killing him.
Near the end of Mission: Cross, Mi-seon and Kang-mu team up and head to an underground bunker, where Hee-ju has started transferring money to various accounts as part of her money laundering scheme.
What follows is a high-octane, action-filled chase. Eventually, Mi-seon and Kang-mu bring Hee-ju down and stop her from wiring all the money. They are an impressive duo, complementing each other effectively as they manage to disarm and kill many henchmen and security guards along the way. This is what the movie was aiming for — a husband and wife who can work together as agents, bringing criminals down cooly.
Mission: Cross ends six months later, and Kang-mu and Mi-seon have a new lease on married life, working together and solving crimes. In their latest criminal case, they are bringing down a drug mule.
This brings the movie full circle. At the start of Mission: Cross, this marriage had zero fun and substance. In the end, they both have something to enjoy with each other. They have a sense of purpose and unity, knowing each other for who they truly are.
