Summary
The overarching theme in this episode is good, despite it feeling like a filler.
I was blindsided that we were offered a filler episode after the emotional ending in the last episode. But Mythic Quest Season 4, Episode 8 is decent, even if it does not move the story forward.
I’m also surprised that, with Side Quest arriving in time for the finale, they have provided audiences with an episode that would fit nicely into that spin-off series.
“Rebrand” opens up introducing gamer streamer “Pootie Shoe” (Ian Grimm’s son). He’s a typical, modern-day streamer with his sponsors and live streams. He appears less energetic once the live stream ends, highlighting how social media never matches reality.
It’s his 17th birthday, and he gets a message from Ian wishing him happy birthday but he responds by telling him to “fuck off”, highlighting that they still do not have a relationship. Despite it being his birthday, he wants to deal with his business and brand, despite his mother wanting him to relax.
Pootie heads to his agency firm to speak to his Head Agent, Spencer. He highlights that he wants a change; he recognizes that his main demographic is mainly kids and wants to expand. He wants to drop his branded shoes, which raises concerns with Spencer due to the legal obstacles surrounding that. However, as the episode title ‘Rebrand’ suggests, Pootie is determined to redefine his image. He would need 10 million dollars to get out of the contract.
Trying to solve his problem, Pootie goes home and asks ChatGPT about how to get 10 million dollars (we’ve all done it), and he receives advice on pyramid schemes. At this point, he’s tempted to message Ian.
But then Pootie has a different idea. He decides to challenge streamer “LOL_Trevor” to a fight to earn the money. Spencer and his mother are understandably concerned about his safety and brand, mainly because Trevor is muscular and athletic. But Pootie still wants a fight and asks for a trainer.
As we all know, influencer boxing is a trend, and Mythic Quest is delving into that subject in almost parodical ways.
At the gym, Ian shows up, worried about his son, which is hilarious because he’s never there for him. He doesn’t want to give his son money to solve problems, but offers him UFC legend Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone as a trainer, so Pootie gets to work in the gym.
But fight night in the Octagon is a disaster for Pootie. Despite Cowboy’s belief in him, Trevor knocks him out immediately.
However, after he recover, Pootie is surprisingly OK about the situation because he made the 10 million dollars needed from the fight, and he can finally control his brand and life. Also, his mother promises to provide him with emancipation, which will legally free him from parental controls, and he will be free to make his own decisions.
The theme of “Rebrand” is reflection, and that’s exactly what Pootie experiences when he visits Spence at his home. Pootie was set on asking Spence if he could exit his shoe brand contract. But Spence’s self-reflecting rant about the challenges of adulthood and the importance of not rushing life makes Pootie pause. He decides to slow down and tells Spence they will talk again after the weekend.
Whatever Spence told Pootie appears to resonate with him; he decides to not go to court for emancipation, and finds time to relax again, which makes his mother happy.
Mythic Quest Season 4, Episode 8 ends with Pootie doing a live stream and he explains to his fans that he’s not ready to rush his life, before launching into his new sponsorship.
The lesson from this episode? Don’t rush life, kids. Be a kid for as long as life lets you. Trust me, I know. Adulthood is not all that it is cracked up to be.
