The fifth episode of Dutton Ranch featured the shocking execution of Dwight, which has sparked many plot theories (was it Joaquin? Oreana? Or a rogue Sheriff?). But in the fan community, viewers are getting increasingly frustrated with Carter. Despite the murder and drama, fans are vocal about his hypocrisy, reckless behavior, and, more specifically, how he’s treating Beth.

Carter Is Getting Under Viewers’ Skin

A trend running through the Dutton Ranch community thread is that many fans are running out of patience with Carter. Viewers are calling him out for hypocrisy – how he is constantly lying to Rip and Beth, skipping school, and acting recklessly, yet has the nerve to call Beth a “liar” when she tries to protect him.

There’s a view that he’s acting foolishly, needing to stop trying to grow up too fast and “just go home to his parents.” The underlying sense of unfairness in the writing doesn’t help his case, especially with Carter’s double standards. Viewers are desperate for him to lay down his stubbornness and “just be a kid.”

“Oh Carter, if you just went to school like you should have, you wouldn’t be experiencing any of this…”

But perhaps the consequences born from trauma will turn Carter into the story’s emotional powder keg. He did witness Dwight get shot and bleed out in front of him, and naturally, a lot of questions will be aimed at him. Facing the fallout of being at the scene of the crime means Carter could soon be in massive trouble.

Theories Over Dwight’s Execution

The sudden execution of Dwight was shocking and caught viewers off guard, sparking speculation about who ordered the hit and why.

“Dwight getting an early exit wasn’t on my bingo card, seemed like a cool character that might have continued to drop some of that folksy wisdom on Carter. I imagine Carter will need it now that Rip and Beth are knee deep in secret evil plans. “Peace will have to wait” is such a Beth Dutton line.”

Here are the main theories so far:

  • One camp believes Joaquin ordered it, though others argue against this, noting the Sheriff doesn’t seem to be in his pocket.
  • Another theory suggests Oreana pulled the strings.
  • A third, more specific theory is that Oreana’s driver called the cops on Dwight for keeping an exotic animal, giving the Sheriff a convenient excuse to take out someone he held a personal grievance against.

Episode 5 Brings More High Praise and Theories

The powerhouse scene between Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Beulah (Annette Bening) is considered the highlight of the episode by many fans. Viewers loved how Beth researched her target to hit Beulah right where it hurts, and the intense chemistry between the two characters is deeply resonating with the audience.

“Battle of the Badass Bitches? LOVE this. Beth has fucking researched and I love that they showed her doing that all episode and you’re like ‘what are you up to, little Beth Dutton’ and then WHAM. Hits Beulah where it hurts.

Also that moment where she leads the horse into the pasture – I feel like that was a genuine giggle from Kelly, that horse likes her.”

Meanwhile, a detailed theory suggests that Joaquin and Rob-Will have been using Beulah’s business to run drugs for a Mexican cartel. Fans suspect that the cartel backed Beulah’s business during a 2000s drought, that the hybrid cows are tied to them, and that the cartel intentionally infected the bull with Foot and Mouth disease to target Beulah – leaving the Dutton Ranch as collateral damage.

“I think Joaquin and Rob-Will have been using Beulah’s business as a means to run drugs for the cartel.”

Of course, we are only halfway through Dutton Ranch, but so far, it’s looking like another stellar addition to Taylor Sheridan’s Duttonverse.
