My stance on Tolkien’s legendarium is that from a creative point of view, it’s impossible to please everyone. I have held the same view for The Rings of Power, which I’ve welcomed with open arms. The more stories from Middle-earth translated to the screen, the better – especially considering I’ve dedicated a lot of my time to studying the author’s texts. However, since the Season 3 episode release schedule was published, I am concerned, and I’ve been trying to understand Prime Video’s position.
To confirm, here are the Season 3 episode release dates:
- November 11th, 2026: Episodes 1–4
- November 18th, 2026: Episodes 5–6
- November 25th, 2026: Episodes 7–8 (Season Finale)
The Problem with the Half-Binge Model
Prime Video has opted for a hybrid between a weekly release and a binge model for the third season. This is strange, considering The Rings of Power benefits from community discussions generated by weekly episode releases – conversations that ultimately spark a wide range of theories, canon arguments, and text analysis. In my view, releasing the episodes over a brief three-week period dilutes the buzz of what should be treated as a major flagship show. Experimenting with release formats usually points to a specific problem a company is trying to solve, yet I don’t understand what that problem could be. Furthermore, Season 3 will feature the forging of the One Ring by Sauron – a pivotal, monumental moment in the story that deserves a slow burn, much like the forging of the other rings or the reveal that Halbrand was Sauron. This season should be a mammoth event.
Is Prime Video Rushing for the Exit or Avoiding a Saturated December?
Is it possible that Prime Video wants to rush the series out of the way as quickly as possible? Have executives changed their view on a project heavily invested in by Bezos’s company? Officially, Prime Video maintains that the series has been a success and has openly shared high viewing figures. Critics have also warmed to the show. On social media – a world that doesn’t feel real half the time – there are obvious haters, but I would hope by now that the lessons of The Last Jedi have been embraced: ignore them.
Shifting to this fast-paced, semi-binge format will only appease the camp of Tolkien purists who claim that The Rings of Power is a shameful adaptation – a claim I think is absolute nonsense.
However, there is another theory here: late 2026 is a massive period for film and TV. Not only are Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three scheduled for the exact same release date on December 18th (which is wild, by the way), but HBO’s Harry Potter series is also debuting on Christmas Day. By my estimates, if Prime Video had opted for a standard single-episode weekly release for Season 3, a few episodes would have walked right into the crossfire of two major movie franchises and the most ambitious HBO project in years. It could simply be that Prime Video is trying to avoid market saturation during a chaotic window.
But that begs the question: why not release Season 3 a little earlier? There is no shame in acknowledging that overlapping with a highly anticipated Harry Potter series will impact viewership. Schedules are made for a reason, and streaming platforms often get too hung up on avoiding direct collisions out of pure stubbornness.
Without labouring the point, hybrid release formats are rarely popular. Viewers generally prefer either a weekly schedule or a full binge, depending on the type of show. For instance, Andor Season 2 used an aggressive multi-episode weekly rollout, which turned many viewers off because Disney failed to account for the massive weekly time commitment required from fans.
In my view, Prime Video should either release The Rings of Power Season 3 in one full binge drop or stick to a strict weekly cadence. If they fear saturation in December, it is better to admit that directly rather than leave the schedule open to negative interpretation.
If it turns out Prime Video is signaling a quiet retreat on their Lord of the Rings commitment, it would be a severe blow to the Tolkien Estate, which greenlit these seasonal storylines. It would also be a massive disappointment for fans. I would feel genuine sadness if a LOTR series with this level of investment somehow faltered. That isn’t good for the future of Middle-earth on screen. We need quality creative works in this universe, regardless of overreactive purists and their grievances.
I remain concerned, but hopefully, this anxiety about the third season will be a distant memory once those first four episodes drop, and I’m back to nerding out again.
