The Walking Dead: Dead City is obviously not afraid of strange pivots, but Season 3, Episode 3, “Emigrants,” took things into frankly surreal territory. From transforming Manhattan into a high-stakes post-apocalyptic hospital to Maggie’s attempt to farm Central Park using scythes made of broom handles and crutches, the spinoff continues to reinvent itself every week, and I cannot keep up with the absurdity.
With the Belleville and Newark rivalries boiling over and Dillard harboring a bizarre secret in his room, Episode 4 has plenty of wild setups to resolve (that’s if AMC does not swing the plot the other way again). Here’s what could happen in Season 3, Episode 4 (“could” being the operative word, to tell you the truth):
Dillard Is Suffering a Break From Reality (Or We Have a Speech Variant)
The strangest moment of “Emigrants” arrived in its closing scenes. While Dillard’s bar was packed with fresh survivors, his attention was completely focused on “Titicaca” — a chained walker in his room who appears to talk to him, leading Dillard to believe they are in love…
I’ll try to work with this bizarre plot point for one moment. Going into Episode 4, there are two possibilities. The most likely scenario is that Dillard has suffered a psychological collapse from the trauma of surviving in Manhattan, projecting his need for emotional connection onto a captive walker. However, given The Walking Dead universe’s gradual introduction of variant walkers (such as climbers and door-knob turners), could Dead City be hinting at a rare vocal variant? Either way, Dillard’s delusion makes him a liability for Negan.
The Belleville and Newark Feud Could Destroy Maggie’s Farming Project
Poor Maggie thought she solved the conflict between the displaced Belleville survivors and the rival group from Newark by giving them a shared purpose — clearing and farming Central Park before the winter sets in. While the group initially fell in line, the feud is not over.
Even though Maggie patched things up, group leaders Bauer and Claudia proved that grudges run deep when they ended up killing each other despite the truce.
With both leaders dead, a power vacuum exists within both factions. Episode 4 could show that Maggie’s Central Park farming commune is built on quicksand, with retaliatory strikes bound to break out among the rank-and-file survivors. This is not unusual in The Walking Dead world, where societies can collapse in a matter of seconds.
Negan’s “Saviors” Instincts Will Fully Re-Emerge
Episode 3 showed Negan slipping back into familiar, threatening habits. Setting up a blindfolded game of piñata using Lucille to force Bauer and Claudia into talking was classic Savior-era Negan. Although he pulled his punches and stopped Dillard from actually hurting anyone, his old darkness remains.
After ruthlessly eliminating the Dama in cold blood in Episode 2, Negan is struggling to maintain his rehabilitated anti-hero persona. As lawlessness creeps back into the hospital community, Negan may decide that Maggie’s peaceful diplomatic approach is going to fail, forcing him to take total control by reigniting his ruthless authority in Episode 4. Either way, I’m not sure that potentially destroying Negan’s character development is a good thing for The Walking Dead universe, if that’s what the writers are doing.
Will Maggie Discover the Truth About the Dama’s Death?
Right now, Maggie is operating under the absurd assumption that the Dama took her own life by stabbing herself in the chest. It is a weak narrative cover that cannot hold up at all.
As Maggie continues organizing the survivors, someone within their ranks — or Negan himself — will inevitably bring forth the truth. Once Maggie realizes Negan executed the Dama in cold blood, whatever fragile partnership they have rebuilt throughout Season 3 will destroy everything the writers have imagined for the viewers, setting up the conflict for the second half of the season.
