Summary
Abyss Season 1, Episode 4 presents the most overly complex use of a plot device that has ever been seen on TV, that it’s almost childlike.

The majority of this recap of Abyss Season 1, Episode 4 is going to be me describing an overcomplicated plot device, which is the ball that can revive dead people and the number of rules it has. Abyss has no shame in its own ludicrous, child-like writing. It is a free-for-all. Let’s just allow the ball to have a new rule whenever it suits the story.
At the start of Episode 4, we learn that the lead prosecutor on the case has been hurt in his altercation with Yeon-cheol, who is the cockiest murderer I’ve seen on TV. The man does not give a s**t. Oh, while his injuries are tended to, Cha Min (Hyo-Seop Ahn) tries to look for Hee-Jin, as he is clearly still in love with her. We are also told that Park Gi-man, the key witness to come across Yeon-cheol may never wake up after being stabbed repeatedly. I’ll wager a guess that Abyss finds a way to wake this man up.
Eventually in Abyss Episode 4, Hee-Jin is found, and Dong-cheol interviews her. She paints a rather terrible image of Cha Min, almost emotionally abusive and lacking care. Se-Yeon (Bo-Young Park), who watches the interview with care, starts to be slightly persuaded by her story and stops trusting Cha Min. That’s until she does a fingerprint scan of him, and learns that it is Cha Min and not some other handsome soul.
Hee-Jin also does a TV call-in interview, forced by Yeon-cheol to further damage the situation. She also says she’s pregnant. Anyway, here is another rule of the abyss ball that is lit up on the screen when Cha Min and Se-Yeon debate over it:
“Only those who were revived by the abyss can see it” – that’s useful.
Anyway, moving on, Abyss Episode 4 sees Hee-Jin attempting to meet Cha Min, to trap him presumably, but before they meet up, she is run over and killed by Yeon-Cheol before he can speak to her. Another rule splashes up on the screen:
“The abyss only works when corpse and person are alone” – gotcha.
Now that Cha Min has revived Hee-Jin by being alone with her and the abyss, he takes her home. He questions why she was run over, and then outrageously suggests killing Park Gi-man, so then he can revive him, as he genuinely knows Yeon-cheol’s current form. I’m not making this up.
Abyss Episode 4 ends with Yeon-cheol attacking Cha Min. Se-Yeon sobs uncontrollably and tries to use the abyss on him, but another rule splashes on the screen:
“If the owner of the abyss dies, the next person who was revived becomes the temporary owner” – Lord help me.
By the way, the next temporary owner is Yeon-cheol, so this story is only going to get more and more bonkers.
