The opening of Chambers Episode 9, “In the Gloaming”, gives us a glimpse of that fateful night, with Becky’s (Lilliya Scarlett Reid) parents traumatized by the decision they had to make. Ben (Tony Goldwyn) decided to take out her heart. The heart was the only thing keeping her alive, but the rest of her was gone. Ben signed the papers, while Nancy (Uma Thurman) was hysterical, but what struck her was that Becky briefly opened her eyes.
Back to present day, and Nancy has to deal with the aftermath of Sasha pushing Jones off the cliff. Nancy’s urgency in wanting to protect Sasha (Sivan Alyra Rose) is apparent, as she also wants to safeguard Becky too. She starts bleaching her clothes, but Sasha insists Becky is inside her, singing “in the gloaming”, a lullaby Nancy used to sing to Becky and Elliot (Nicholas Galitzine) when younger, and then tries to kill herself; in an intense moment, Nancy stops her.
Elliot tells Ben the truth about Becky in Episode 9, with his father focusing on the fact that he needs to recover. He tries explaining to Ben that he caught Becky cutting up mice and the truth about the night where he allegedly attacked her.
“In the Gloaming” reaches a whole new level of desperation for Nancy, who wants to help Becky. She traps Sasha so she cannot leave, to try and get Becky to talk, playing old family videos to get her to surface. I found this rather cruel, as Sasha repeats a few times that she wants to go home. Becky finally surfaces, revealing that Jones did not rape her, but that he summoned evil. Meanwhile, Frank (Marcus LaVoi) has got wind that something strange is afoot, and sets off to the house with TJ and Yvonne (Kyanna Simone Simpson), but is unfortunately arrested for the murder of Jones on the way.
And then comes the series’ significant twist; Ben arrives home, and Becky tells Nancy that Ben was involved in the rituals that hurt her with The Annex Foundation. Ben is the reason that Becky killed herself. Ben becomes a new character in that split moment, telling Sasha/Becky that she was special and that he had no choice. At that moment, a mother’s love overcomes Nancy, and she stabs Ben.
As TJ and Yvonne show up at the house, the next scene seals the best episode of the series so far, as they see that Sasha has fully transformed into Becky.
