Dead to Me was always leading to this moment; an emotional standoff between Jen (Christina Applegate) and Judy (Linda Cardellini) with the truth finally out, but before Episode 10, “You Have To Go” reaches that moment, Jen is clearing and cleaning the guest house, and burning everything in there.

Jen also visits the police to try and get Judy arrested, but the investigator is routinely unhelpful, explaining that at present her confession is not enough based on her account.

And then the standoff happens in “You Have To Go”; Judy approaches Jen where she is working for Ted’s mother and explains she is going to turn herself in with a maximum sentence. In a plea, she says the worst punishment of all is losing Jen, their friendship and that she wants to fix everything. You can tell Jen at this moment is torn; her loving friendship with Judy grew instantly, and she knows she is not an evil person, but she is furious and upset, and threatens her with Ted’s gun, forcing her to leave.

Judy’s next plan is to clear the bank account and run away while Jen tries to make friends with the neighbor across the road. The entire situation is not helped when her youngest son makes it known that he likes Judy.

Due to Judy clearing her bank account, Steve goes searching for her and turns up as Jen’s house; they speak about Judy and agree that chaos follows her, but the conversation takes a weird turn when Steve makes it known that he was in the car that fatal night. Jen pressures him into explaining what happened that night, but Steve insists that it was Judy who wanted to drive off. Jen doesn’t believe him, and at that moment defends Judy and points the gun at him. While this is happening, Judy is trying to get herself killed by planting herself in the middle of the road.

And then Episode 10 sets it all up for Season 2. As Judy stands in the middle of the road getting heckled by an annoyed driver, Jen rings her asking her to come home. Steve is dead in the swimming pool.
