The Chosen One season 1, episode 6, “Gift of Death” ends with an outrageous cliffhanger to find reasons to summon a season 2. I found the finale slightly desperate in parts, but the story still lingers in your mind post the credits. It starts with Lúcia Santeiro (Paloma Bernardi) getting out of Angelina’s stranglehold and explaining she is not The Chosen One’s life; she is his messenger. Lúcia manages to run away before Santiago captures Angelina.
Brewing beneath the finale, episode 6, “Gift of Death”, sees Silvino convincing the outsiders that the healer is back – we are treated to a flashback of his, revealing that a Father of his Church believes there is evil surrounding the cure, and he prevented his people from returning to the village.
Lúcia attempts to save Mateus and begs for help, but he decides to stay devoted to The Chosen One (Ricardo Félix Rojas) who announces that Angelina is now a servant to Lúcia.
Episode 6, “Gift of Death” then moves to the trial of the two doctors. The Chosen One asks for a gesture from Damião Almeida (Pedro Caetano) and Enzo Vergani (Gutto Szuster). In other words, he wants the doctors to admit that they have faith. Damião states that The Chosen One seeks the truth, not faith. Damião offers his life to The Chosen One and stabs himself in a moment of horror.
Meanwhile, during this commotion, Silvino and the outsiders arrive outside the broken Church. The Chosen One mocks Enzo, calling him a scientist, and asks him to heal Damião with his hands. Enzo begs The Chosen One to save Damião, seeing that as a demonstration of faith. This ploy does not work, and Damião’s condition continues to get worse.
Now it’s Lúcia’s turn to change everyone’s fortunes. Episode 6, “Gift of Death” sees Lúcia convincing The Chosen One to go outside to reveal himself to the world. He steps out and starts collapsing, crying that he can feel everyone’s pain. He looks up to the sky and shouts “father!” and begins bleeding from his eyes. He has bled tears to the world and uses the opportunity to make a speech, stating that he can now heal everyone from sickness. Santiago looks devastated. Meanwhile, Lúcia and Enzo escape; wounded Damião has been kidnapped.
Episode 6, “Gift of Death” returns to the real world, with Lúcia reporting her experiences and events to a committee, however, due to a different story submitted by Enzo, they refuse her report and suspend her license to practise medicine. Six months later, Enzo approaches Lúcia, begging that she listen to him. He proves that Damião is part of the cult and is alive and well. But Lúcia is disheartened by Enzo’s betrayal and eagerness to show the world a manufactured cure based on what he found in the village. Enzo reveals that the water in the well had dye in it and that they must return to the village to figure out how The Chosen One truly cures. Lúcia is adamant she will not return, but season 1 ends with a wild cliffhanger; Enzo has infected Lúcia with the new mutated Zika virus – she must return to be cured.
This seemed like a wild character turn to me to set up a season 2, so I am not entirely sure how I feel about a continuation.
