We have a new “Best Episode So Far” of Designated Survivor: 60 Days. Episode 14 was enticingly thrilling and unexpected. Where shall we even start…

Kicking off from the previous chapter, Park Mu-jin (Jin-hee Ji) is still mulling over the Discrimination Act. Yeon-seok informs Park about his intentions to announce his Presidential Candidacy while trying to play mind games, claiming that he knows what the people of Korea want. He departs with the lines, “President, you can never defeat me”. At this point, the Netflix series has viewers ready and poised. S*** is about to get serious.

Park Mu-jin calls a cabinet meeting and decides to delegate the Discrimination Act to the next administration; much to the delight of his staff. He wants to win.

And then it escalates; Na-gyeong has managed to find a way to get inside the suit shop where Mr. Kim spends most of his days tailoring Yeon-seok’s suits and discussing the intentions of the VIP. Using the bug she planted on General Eun; she finds her way around the suit shop. She finds damaging information on Yeon-seok, but as she is about to leave, she is captured by one of Kim’s men.

The suit shop moment in “The Outcome” was taut, as you could tell that the scenario was not going to go smoothly. The operation was too smooth and ideal, but Episode 14 made us believe it would be plain-sailing.

With Park Mu-jin fretting that he’s potentially lost another Korean since the bombing, he demands that Na-gyeong is found. She is trapped in a car with a bomb, while Kim tells Yeon-seok that she has been dealt with. Na-gyeong manages to get out of the vehicle but realizes it’s in a parking lot next to a mall so she drives the car away so it can explode in a nearby lake. Victory is close for Na-gyeong; she rings Park Mu-jin and asks him to send out an arrest on Yeon-seok as she has damning evidence on the Minister — before she was kidnapped, she managed to upload all the documents.

“The Outcome” relies on peaks and troughs in the story with the Na-gyeong finally one step ahead of the corrupt organization. It feels like Episode 14 is the breaking point for the character, who is presumably exhausted from the number of assassination attempts on her.

Predictably, Yeon-seok gets wind of the incoming arrest and disappears. His world is slowly falling apart. Mr. Kim is not answering his calls, but he has got a lifeline. General Eun offers to get rid of Park’s administration if he joins him. General Eun is planning a coup, but what he does not realize is that Han-mo is listening in.

What follows is an aggressive fight scene between Han-mo and the NIS Director’s men, but once again Na-gyeong is one step ahead, sending police to the scene to save him.

President Park and his staff discuss the pending coup — and now they know the group leading on it: The Milky Way Society. Park Mu-jin has one more card up his sleeve — convince General Lee to stop the coup; the same man he has embarrassed and kept under house arrest.

All the “New Age” symbolism comes to life in Episode 14, with Na-gyeong seeing Masonic type statues in the suit shop. Mr. Kim also references how this organization picks Hitler and other world leaders.

The moment Park Mu-jin confronts General Lee is a highlight of the series. If we take ourselves back to the beginning of season 1 where Park mumbled through meetings and was pushed aside by General Lee, it’s evident in Episode 14, “The Outcome”, that he has grown into his role. He catches General Lee off guard with military facts, trying to wade into his competitive stubbornness.

Designated Survivor: 60 Days Season 1, Episode 14, “The Outcome” ends with Na-gyeong ahead of the game again. She manages to track down Yeon-seok, who is on his way to the military. In an unexpected moment, Yeon-seok is shot dead by his aide — the aide also shoots himself. He wanted Yeon-seok to leave the world a hero. Back at the Blue House, Park Mu-jin has been told that General Lee has joined General Eun, but only time will tell if Park’s words have made an impact.

So that is the end of Yeon-seok. Based on the Netflix thumbnails, there are two episodes left — who knows how this will all end.

Presidential Secretary Notes

  • After delegating the Discrimination Act, Park Mu-jin meets the Director from the last episode to reassure her that he will pass it once elected.
  • Assemblywoman Yun genuinely wanted the discrimination act approved.
