Summary

Netflix Film Falling Inn Love is as what the title suggests – a routine, seen-it-before but easy to watch love story.

Back at it again, and bringing no surprises, the streaming giant have released another schmoozy rom-com to their platform. Scraped from the barrel and scrubbed clean, Netflix’s Falling Inn Love has its entire premise in its title, which punners will undoubtedly appreciate.

You could easily criticize Falling Inn Love but it unashamedly offers what it says on the tin, meaning there is no choice but to adhere to its lighthearted nature, watching every single predictable step of the way, edging itself closer to Hallmark territory, rather than an elegant piece of content ready to be groundbreaking for the streaming world.

Falling Inn Love follows Gabriela Diaz (Christina Milian), a San Francisco designer. On the same week she suffers a break-up with a man that lacks a severe degree of self-awareness, the firm she works for collapses. A night in with WiFi and wine goes terribly wrong, and she spontaneously applies to win an Inn in New Zealand to run and operate as she pleases.

What Gabriela Diaz didn’t realise is that she was winning a dump — the Inn needs completely renovating.

As someone who cannot grasp DIY, Falling Inn Love oddly reminded me of a friend who decided to buy a completely dishevelled house that was unliveable, and within a year, he made it look like a brand new house. Netflix’s Falling Inn Love is based in the heart of New Zealand with a middle-class working woman trying to get to grips with her new reality that she deems temporary — her real reality is back in the city, trying to land landmark deals for the big cash. Gabriela’s entire motive is to flip and make money from the Inn. But the Netflix film becomes heart over mind as generically attractive Jake enters the fold, and guess what? He’s brilliant at DIY.

You know how Falling Inn Love is going to end in the first minute; it’s easy to predict a line or a scenario or a romantic moment. After watching hundreds of these movies, I’m starting to believe that I belong in a small minority that gets bored at this type of storytelling. Like the monthly Hallmark films, there must be an entire audience out there that just loves the romantic journey from singleton to out-right in love with a random person who follows you out of some undying adoration.

If a heart-warming, predictable rom-com with average acting engages your brain chemistry, then Netflix film Falling Inn Love will be for you.
