The question on everyone’s lips after Why Women Kill Episode 7 should be just how far are these women — and this show — willing to go? Now that the present-day storyline is finally developing some real momentum, CBS’s dark comedy is proving itself to be a real stand-out in the current TV landscape, and what’s best about it is that it seems to be getting better.
In the 1960s, we find Beth Ann (Ginnifer Goodwin) going through a whirlwind of emotions in “I Found Out the Secret…”. It looks like Rob’s (Sam Jaeger) relationship with April (Sadie Calvano) is over. But her celebrations with Sheila (Alicia Coppola) are short-lived because April is much more persistent than she realized, turning up at the house in search of Rob, and forcing Sheila to cover for Beth Ann. A private word with April telling her to get over Rob doesn’t do much good either, since she reveals to Beth Ann that she’s pregnant with his child. This being a sore spot for Beth Ann — and obviously Rob too — causes her to panic. Will the truth do? Of course not! Instead, she tells him she has cancer. Yikes.
In the 80s, Simone (Lucy Liu) and Karl (Jack Davenport) continue to be the clear highlight of the show, and that’s especially true in Why Women Kill Episode 7 now that Karl has essentially become her gay best friend. Both relish their news roles and their opportunities to finally be open about their extramarital relationships, even if an affair with a married man and another with a boy barely of legal age still require a degree of secrecy. Tommy (Leo Howard) splurges a good chunk of his inheritance on a fancy diamond brooch for Simone, which prompts his mother, Naomi (Katie Finneran), to jump to conclusions. She assumes drugs, and feels she has no choice but to break into his room and snoop through his journal. The standout sequence of “I Found Out the Secret…” is Simone desperately trying to contain that situation. In celebration of getting away with it, she and Tommy plan to go away for the summer. Karl, meanwhile, receives some troubling medical news.
It’s in the present-day that Why Women Kill Season 1, Episode 7 surprises most, since the complicated open marriage of Eli (Reid Scott) and Taylor (Kirby Howell-Baptiste) has finally reached a point of being watchable — and even moderately interesting if I’m honest. Eli is, thanks to Jade (Alexandra Daddario), back on drugs, and he isn’t making much of a secret about it. When Taylor suggests they all attend a polyamory retreat, he brings a decently-sized stash with him. But his nerves, exacerbated by the drugs, can’t be contained. He ends up panicking and attempting a tame getaway, spilling the cocaine all over the trunk. When Taylor spots his nose bleeding, she demands he opens it and finds the product spilled everywhere. The ride home is a nightmare. She demands to have his wallet and credit cards and testicles, but midway through the argument his agent calls to inform him that his script has been purchased — and for $1.2 million. Given a new lease of life by the good news, Eli refuses to go to rehab. Still entranced by his promise of looking after her, Jade decides to stay with him, much to Taylor’s disgust.
