Episode 1 of Season 3, “The Subsidence Adventure” could fool you for being slow, but it does set up for the rest of the story. It’s a new case for Billy (Billy Bob Thornton). The opening scene shows a couple (Bobby and Gene) at a farm minding their own business. Their dog brings in what looks like a dead bird, but then it flaps out of their house. At night, Bobby is disturbed by a sound, and ventures outside in the middle of her land of crops. The ground underneath her collapses, and you can see a lot of water. There is a reference at the start of a long drought.
Billy goes out to see the collapse and take on a potential case. Gene is determined to understand if the collapse was responsible to another party as the death of his wife hurts him.
Billy visits the offices of California Blackwood Country Water Board and learns it shares the same building and rent of Tall Grass Farms. There’s something afoot here.
He decides to talk to another farmer at a casino, who also happens to be the President of the Water Board. Billy presses him about the distribution of water, but the farmer pushes back, airing that Gene was extraordinarily unlucky and that it has been a severe drought.
“The Subsidence Adventure” turns strange quick, as this farmer joins other acquaintances at the back of the casino and it is evident they are concerned that Billy is lurking around. They all smoke what I presume is a potent strain of marijuana, as it knocks them all out instantly.
Goliath Season 3, Episode 1, “The Subsidence Adventure” closes out with Billy at the bar, and he sees that his ex Marisol is getting married on TV. When he returns to his hotel room, he notices that water is overflowing in the sink and the bath and a bird taps on his window. He ventures out to check out some drilling activity, and a disgruntled worker is disappointed that he has returned. Someone knocks him out from behind.
