This recap of The Rookie Season 2, Episode 1, “Impact” contains spoilers.

The opening episode of The Rookie picks up where it left off with the city shocked by the attempted attack on citizens. Tim (Eric Winter) has collapsed into shock, with his life seemingly in danger. Wade is alerted that there is a third terrorist. There’s drama everywhere as the ambulance with Tim in is attacked by a shooter. And then, all of a sudden, Tim leaves the ambulance and puts bullets into the shooter.

A little ridiculous really, but what can you expect from The Rookie?

“Impact” sees the rookies receive their test results on the board; however, their names aren’t against them. They’ve officially finished training, but their next task is to figure out who got the lowest score.

John gets to ride out with Wade, and they find a store with stolen police uniforms and gear. Meanwhile, Tim is giving Lucy a hard time, explaining to her that it is her last day as a trainee and cannot wear short sleeves. Tim plays a bomb prank on her and continues to berate her over the investigation of the man who has lost his wife. When she finally loses it and asks Tim why he still doesn’t respect her, he explains that he is disappointed she filed the wrong report on him — she should have noted that he was suicidal during the quarantine.

This Tim has a weird way of engaging with people.

Anyway, we finally find out the scores — John got the highest score, Lucy got the middle, but surprisingly, golden-boy West got the lowest. This has an impact on him, as he has trained for this moment his whole life. He is asked to teach a class of cadets and ends up starting a rant about achievements, which Lopez frowns upon.

Episode 1, “Impact” then gets in on the action; the criminal that Wade and John tried catching over the stolen police gear has been killed in a homicide and Lucy comes across a fake cop. Jessica and John go to the suspect’s house and learn a missing person is a hostage. John tries out his usual heroics and sneaks into the house and throws the suspect out of the window. Meanwhile, Tim and Lucy prevent the criminals from carrying out their activities on the highway under police guise.

The Rookie Season 2, Episode 1, “Impact” closes with Wade warning West about his reaction to getting the lowest score — he cruelly extends West’s term on the programme on his last day as a rookie. The Rookie needed a reason to keep a rookie. Meanwhile, John has been irked by Jessica all episode, and finally confronts her about his feelings as a cop. Unlike her, he cannot go numb to what he sees — Jessica tells him she’s falling in love with him.
