Another week, another delightful episode of The Rookie and Episode 2, “The Night General” sees John Nolan teaming up with new Night Detective Nick Armstrong, played by Harold Perrineau, an actor I’ve struggled to separate since his days on Lost. Damn, Michael was a traitorous motherf—er.

While out on patrol with Nick, they attend a nearby hospital due to a frustrated (and high) patient. While grappling with a larger man, John suddenly sees a former love interest — a doctor who works at the hospital called Grace — and there’s a weird vibe between them. Nick toyingly presses John about it.

I’ve come to realize since the start of the series that John must have some vibe that allows the most attractive of women to be besotted by him.

After, John and Nick rush to a home invasion — there’s a murder of a man named Jeff. John actively enjoys the investigation with the detective and realizes it is linked to opioids — symbolic of the crisis America is undergoing.

As homicides are investigated, Tim sees an old friend called Rex who partakes in Fugitive Recovery — basically, he does bounties. Lucy tries to do the old hard cop routine on Rex, but Tim allows him to try and capture his target.

John and Nick find another victim — an attempted murder. The victim is deemed to be unable to wake up just yet, so John does his usual — pizza and beer at his house? Of course, Nick cannot refuse.

And John cannot help himself. He goes to the hospital outside of his shift to speak to Grace. Grace becomes irritated and says she cannot do this. “You broke my heart”. Damn, John’s a heartbreaker.

John and Nick interview Matt and his son about Jeff. Nick puts a tracker on Jeff’s car, believing it will take them to the person responsible. Meanwhile, Rex is hurt on a mission and Tim and Lucy scour the house — they find the fugitive feebly trying to hide under the stairs.

John and Nick are alerted to a warehouse where Matt is — Matt is trying to kill himself while Tony is sunken in what looks like cement mix. Nick claims that John has to save Tony as he is the current victim in this scenario — John has to pick. He chooses Tony, and as he walks off, Matt hangs himself. This was a big moment for John, but he makes a brave choice.

The Rookie Season 2, Episode 2, “The Night General” ends with John apologizing to Grace for hurting her in the past, and she accepts it with a smile. Will this blossom further? Who knows with John.

Police Notes

  • Off duty arrest and West catches his landlord dealing. He needs to move house. Finds a place in the police car parking lot — he needs an RV — Lucy offers him a room.
  • Tim gets Lucy to read him a leadership book. Suggests he has a learning difficulty due to only being able to learn from hearing.
  • West is frustrated he’s back in long sleeves.
