Summary

“Square Hamburger, Round Buns” is a fitting title for an episode about its title characters figuring out where they fit — and realizing it might be with each other.

This recap of Bob Hearts Abishola Season 1, Episode 4, “Square Hamburger, Round Buns”, contains spoilers. You can check out our thoughts on the previous episode by clicking these words.

The title of Bob Hearts Abishola Episode 4, “Square Hamburger, Round Buns”, isn’t uttered until the very end of the episode, when Tunde (Barry Shabaka Henley) sneaks a late-night burger and marvels at how well two contrasting ingredients work together. The same can be said of Abishola (Folake Olowofoyeku) and Bob (Billy Gardell), who spend the entire episode figuring out that, despite their differences, maybe they’re much better suited for each other than they thought.

The episode begins with Abishola recounting to Kemi (Gina Yashere) an argument she’d had with Olu (Shola Adewusi) as a result of her calling things off with Bob. And her day only gets worse from there. At work, she corrects a surgeon, Dr. Sanjiv Chakraborty (Vishesh Chachra), when he tries to administer a potentially dangerous combination of medicine to a patient. He threatens her with an official complaint; she threatens him with revealing his ineptitude. When she returns home, Olu and Tunde have arranged a date between her and polite pharmacist Chukwuemeka (Tony Tambi), but just as they seem to be getting on he mentions that, should they work out, he would “allow her to keep her job”, which he thinks is very modern.

It isn’t the only date that goes terribly in Bob Hearts Abishola Episode 4. Bob tries out a dating site and finds himself sharing a meal with a woman who might charitably be described as a psychopath. Douglas (Matt Jones) blabs to Dottie (Christine Ebersole) about his romantic endeavours and he’s forced to defend his moustache, which he insists is a Tom Selleck or a Burt Reynolds, not a Freddie Mercury. It’s an important distinction.

Luckily it’s a distinction that Abishola understands. At the end of Bob Hearts Abishola Season 1, Episode 4, they run into each other at their favourite bench and enjoy just sitting. Them spending one episode apart only reminded them and the audience how fun they are together. Maybe next week.
