The titular useless potheads in Bob Hearts Abishola Episode 8 are Douglas (Matt Jones) and Christina (Maribeth Monroe), who’re still struggling to care for Dottie (Christine Ebersole) after her stroke. For that matter, so is Bob (Billy Gardell). Luckily Abishola (Folake Olowofoyeku) is still around to care for her, but she has other responsibilities, and in her absence, the siblings need to come together to help her — and they struggle to come together for anything at all.

A practice effort at transporting Dottie from her bed to her wheelchair is disastrous; Christina employs her theatre camp experience to play her mother, which is funny but doesn’t help. Through a baby monitor — a cruel reminder than we raise our kids so that they can eventually take care of us — Dottie can be heard asking Abishola for a grandchild. It seems she has taken a shine to her after all.

Without Abishola, Douglas and Christina have to break away from Love Island to care for Dottie. Olu (Shola Adewusi) and Tunde (Barry Shabaka Henley) are watching too. “Where is this Love Island?” Tunde asks. “Don’t worry about it,” replies Olu, “you are not going there.” It seems even Nigerians aren’t immune to British trash TV.

Goodwin (Bayo Akinfemi) and Kofo (Anthony Okungbowa) miss it, though, since they’re busy schmoozing potential business partners with sushi and making up elaborate refugee stories in order to close a deal, for which they want commission rather than a bonus. Bob agrees to 7% and takes them out drinking, rather than going home to Dottie, leaving Christina and Douglas to make thoughtless blunders about her condition. (Douglas, while playing poker: “I have a weak hand.”)

Eventually in Bob Hearts Abishola Episode 8, Douglas and Christina being pleased with themselves and getting high become too much for Dottie, who calls Abishola instead. Abishola spends much of “Useless Potheads” being worried about Dottie when she perhaps shouldn’t be, but Kemi (Gina Yashere) and Gloria (Vernee Watson) remind her that it’s really Bob she cares about, whether she wants to admit it or not. She could probably stand to be more worried about Dele (Travis Wolfe Jr.), who might have aced his math test, but also seems to have made a music video to Kendrick Lamar’s “DNA” — something one assumes his family wouldn’t approve of.

Nonetheless, Abishola goes to see Dottie in her off-hours and finds Bob asleep in the chair by her bedside. Her smile when she sees him gives it all away. Bob Hearts Abishola Season 1, Episode 8 ends with her confessing to him that she just might have liked him when she first saw him, even if she pretended that she didn’t. He offers to drive her home as Dottie, only pretending to be asleep, finally smiles.
