It’s all systems go in Medical Police Season 1, Episode 1, “Wheels Up” as Lola and Owen have to drop their day drop to fight a deadly virus.
This recap of Netflix Series Medical Police Season 1, Episode 1, “Wheels Up” contains significant spoilers.
Episode 1, “Wheels Up” gets to the core of the drama almost instantly after it introduces our lead characters — Lola Spratt (Erinn Hayes) and Owen Maestro (Rob Huebel). Medical Police’s comedy is amusing instantly as the hospital is gripped by a patient that is enduring a horrible fit. Lola sees a rash, and once they recover the fit, they push the man on the trolley into the distance. It was a comedic “phew” moment.
But then another patient arrives, with the same rash.
Episode 1, “Wheels Up” plays this “thriller”-like montage of Lola spending night and day looking into the rash and why she believes it is abnormal, while now and again one of her colleagues interrupts her. She submits her findings.
She wants to present her research at the site where the virus has spread, which means convincing surgeon Owen to join her by giving him $12. When they get to the University, she is greeted by Sloane McIntyre (Sarayu Blue) who lets them both know that they are a secret anti-bioterrorism unit under the CDC, so secret the White House doesn’t even know about them.
An outbreak of the virus has hit Berlin, so it’s all systems go!
Lola heads on the plane and Owen accidentally ends up joining this secret unit due to needing the toilet and the plane was the next available vacant bathroom (and he splashed water on his pants, so he waited until it dried).
Episode 1, “Wheels Up” then turns into a Mission Impossible/Dark Knight Rises scene as the plane is taken over by who I assume is the terrorists who start randomly shooting the passengers. After a struggle, they eventually take out their enemies. Sloane McIntyre tells Lola and Owen to parachute out of the plane while she ensures the plane does not crash into civilians. She’s apparently making a sacrifice.
Medical Police Season 1, Episode 1, “Wheels Up” closes with Lola and Owen crashing out and landing in a foreign town they do not recognize. The police point their guns at them both. What a high-fuelled start to the dark comedy.
