Apparently not content with being just a hostage thriller, Inhuman Resources Episode 4 quickly shifts into new genre territory: the prison drama. Alain arrives and is taken to his cell, and is immediately targeted on the grounds of being a newcomer.
Naturally, company directors and shareholders continue to have a vested interest in Alain’s case since this is, after all, still a corporate thriller. It’s also a family drama, hence Nicole being interrogated about what she knew of her husband’s plans, and Lucie arriving to discuss his case with him, though apparently its complexities require a more specialized lawyer than her.
Things aren’t looking good for Alain here in Inhuman Resources Episode 4. His browsing history shows premeditation, he’d had a will drawn up, and he went to the staged event armed. Where he got the gun from becomes an important question. A tight-lipped Alain is desperate for Lucie to defend him but she insists she doesn’t have the experience – though she knows somebody who does.
Anger is a theme here. Alain’s primary justification for his actions is simply that he was angry; this is what he says to Nicole when she’s allowed to visit him in the hospital wing after two fellow prisoners break a couple of his fingers as a “message from a friend.” It was anger that landed Alain in prison in the first place, and he’s angry that his life is in danger while he’s there; he’s angry that nobody seems interested, though his previous career of teaching people how to pass tests might be useful in getting ambitious guards onside.
The big reveal of Inhuman Resources Episode 4 is that there was more to Alain’s plan than initially met the eye, involving the hacking of the company servers and access to all their money and dirty secrets. This is all prompted by Fontana arriving for a visit. Alain stole 22 million, and he claims also a list of VIPs who accepted bribes. That last item turns out to be a bluff, but whatever it takes to survive.
Charles is Alain’s next visitor; Alain’s co-conspirator thinks the money is secure, but Alain isn’t so sure. We see the show’s themes reflected brightly in Charles here, whose workaholic attitude once blinded him to what his loved ones were going through. We also see the beginnings of a new subplot involving Nicole, who has barely visited Alain, claims to be finding the situation too hard, and plans to move on alone. Both Charles and Fontana end Inhuman Resources Episode 4 watching her as she kisses another man in the street.
Plenty has been revealed here in an episode that characterizes Alain as a much more calculated and cerebral man than first appearances suggested. But he has by no means gotten away with his scheme, and the last two episodes of this brief but tense miniseries promise more developments to come.
