Victor’s mother Isabel wants to arrange his 16th birthday. As his parents argue, Victor agrees to have a party. He believes something fun and distracting will get his family back together properly.

Party planning

Victor breaks the party news to Mia and his friends and Lake wants to spread the news to make it a better event. Lake invites Benji to the party and he’s going to bring his boyfriend — Victor messages Simon and he hopes his older family members will be accepting.

Older relatives and introduction to the family.

The older relatives arrive and Pilar is about to reveal the reason why they moved but Victor is the saviour once again and changes the conversation. Victor’s grandfather cannot wait to meet his girlfriend Mia. Lake and Mia arrive at the party and Victor introduce Mia to the family. Victor reveals to Simon that his father hasn’t smiled in days until he met Mia — another example of being the family saviour.

Fixing other people’s problems

Simon messages Victor stating it sounds like he is trying to fix other people’s problems, rather than his own. Trouble is afoot however as the grandfather sees Benji and his boyfriend kiss. Victor’s father wants a word and tells him that his grandfather saw his two male friends kissing and reminds him that it is a family occasion. Victor fights back and says his friends can be whoever they want. Isabel tells the grandparents that they are raising their kids well. The grandmother states that this is not the world they grow up in.

The tension eases

Pilar walks in and defends her family by saying the reason they left Colombia was for a better life. Suddenly, the tension eases and the family have fun. In the kitchen, Mia keeps trying to bond with Victor’s mother. She explains how being around her reminds her of her mother but she’s trying to push past it for Victor. Isabel admits she didn’t expect to be like her mother-in-law — “Cold as ice,” and thanks Mia for speaking to Pilar.

How does Love, Victor season 1, episode 5, “Sweet Sixteen” end?

Benji has to leave the party but then it is cake time where everyone sings “Happy Birthday”. Afterwards, Victor thanks Mia for all her help on his birthday. They both confirm they are in a relationship and kiss. Victor messages Simon that against the odds, his birthday turned out okay but that he’s right — he needs to focus on his own problems: “I wish sixteen was the year that I finally figure out what I want”. Victor’s father walks in and tells Victor that he’s proud of him for standing up to his grandfather but hopes that his younger brother is not gay. Episode 5 confirms that Victor has a lot to sort out.
