How does Unsolved Mysteries, season 1, episode 5, “Berkshires UFOs” open?

“On the evening of September 1, 1969, an unexplained phenomenon occurred in Berkshire County, Massachusetts” is the opening gambit. A mother and her children saw “something” but never spoke of it for years.

Some background

Jane Green has lived in Great Barrington since 12 years old — it’s a small town and everyone knows about each other. Tom Warner talks about how his family has lived in this place for six generations. Thom Reed moved into this town with this family from a city — Nancy Reed, his mother, started a restaurant business. Melanie Kirchdorfer is a local business owner and has lived in the town since 1957. Their whole lives changed on September 1, 1969. Unsolved Mysteries season 1, episode 5, “Berkshires UFOs” gives background before getting into the elements of the story.

A great life

Jane Green was driving at night and saw this immense, bright floating object — there was no noise, no engine sounds, it was just there. It lifted up and went over the mountain. Other cars pulled over and saw it.

Go home

Tom Warner heard a voice that told him to go home and he was running constantly on the spot but not going anywhere. A UFO dropped from the sky and a beam went on him. A friend saw him disappear right in front of him.

Beamed up

Melanie Kirchdorfer remembers the great light and the UFO as well and then she levitated on to the ship. Her sister doesn’t remember seeing the light — she completely forgot about that night the next day. Tom remembers seeing Melanie on the ship — they were both laid out on tables. Melanie remembers seeing small children that left one at a time in the room on the ship and then both Tom and Melanie remember waking up back in the town randomly in the middle of the night. Unsolved Mysteries season 1, episode 5, “Berkshires UFOs” provides a chilling account of UFO abductions.

Swapped seats

Thom and Nancy also saw the UFO. Their car just lit up — everything was deathly silent and then all of a sudden the wildlife around them got suddenly got loud. Neither of them remembers the three hours that went by and when they woke up, they don’t remember anything. Nancy was in the passenger seat and her mother was in the driver’s seat miles down the road. Thom highlights that his grandmother didn’t drive. They were in the wrong seats.

How does Unsolved Mysteries, season 1, episode 5, “Berkshires UFOs” end?

The radio station was inundated with calls from people around the town afterward. There are no police records at the station about what happened that night. A historian looked through the local paper and saw no reference to the abductions or UFO sightings — the former editor thought it was a joke. Tom Warner states how no-one believed him or wanted to talk about it so he painted what happened that night as therapy. The interviewees discuss how they struggled afterward to adapt to their experiences. The military has reported countless UFO sightings since. I am going to go out on a whim and say since the Pentagon conveniently released verified images of UFOs in the middle of the pandemic while the world was noisy, that these people are telling the truth. Unsolved Mysteries season 1, episode 5, “Berkshires UFOs” brings an account of UFO sightings in 1969 in a chilling manner.
