Summary

“Sofia & Edgar” ups the stakes in the story as the lead characters find themselves in new predicaments which complicates their notebook game somewhat.

This recap of Netflix’s Dash & Lily season 1, episode 5, “Sofia & Edgar” contains significant spoilers.

We recapped every episode — check out the archive.

The opening

Dash is not sure what to do with his ex-girlfriend Sofia in town. The episode renames the title of the show — “Sofia & Edgar”. Meanwhile, Dash and Lily keep giving each other dares through the notebook. Dash is sent to a mochi session while Lily is sent to a crafts group.

Episode 5 is the first time where Dash and Lily’s romance is under serious doubt — they both have demons and a past to deal with which might get in the way.

Continuing to trade dares

Lily tells Dash to “listen to his mochi”. The others in the session clap as he finally gets it. Lily believes that Dash has misjudged her in the crafts group as she loves things like this. The second part of the crafts group is to destroy what they’ve created — “A break room”.

“Sofia & Edgar” continues to encourage both characters to push each other to do things they wouldn’t usually do.

Bumping into Edgar

While walking through the city, Lily bumps into Edgar. He has been trying to look for her — he keeps calling her “weird”. Edgar claims that he’s always jealous of Lily and now he thinks she is adorable. Edgar invites her to a “slam poetry” night. He’s wearing her friendship bracelet.

This has changed the course of her story. We are not witnessing a love-square.

The father returns

Sofia continues to message Dash, and she’s persistent. Dash’s father arrives home early, so his solitude is over. His father has a new woman, and he invites Dash out for dinner. Dash writes in his notebook about his father’s return and ends up talking about Sofia — he rips out the page, realizing how inappropriate that is.

Lily finds out about her parents and Fiji

Lily overhears her brother break up with his boyfriend, so she comforts him. Langston didn’t want to do a long-distance relationship. Langston then drops a bombshell and reveals that their parents have gone to Fiji because her father has a new job there and she’ll be moving. Lily is upset that everyone has lied to her.

Everything seems to be frantic for Lily in “Sofia & Edgar” — nothing is going her way, and she’s growing confused with Edgar showing an interest in her.

The meal

Dash joins his father and his new partner at a restaurant. Sofia joins the table — Dash has always found her comforting when he meets her father. The father keeps on making Dash angry, but then he listens to his mochi and calms down. Dash expresses a happy memory with his father — a place where he fell in love with books.

Lily is mad

Lily is so angry at the news of her parents that she goes outside and smashes snowmen — she’s taken Dash’s advice to let her anger out. She then heads to the “slam poetry” night and grabs the microphone looking for Edgar. Lily starts her own poem. She points out Edgar in the crowd and calls him a bully. She describes how her self-esteem was shot because of him. Lily explains how Edgar doesn’t have power over her anymore.

The ending

Edgar stands up and explains that he didn’t know about any of this and wants to make it up to her. He invites Lily to a Christmas Eve party. Lily accepts his invitation.

Meanwhile, on the way out of the restaurant, Sofia tells Dash that she’s moving back to New York and that she hopes to be friends again. They head to a social event together. At the event, Edgar speaks to Dash and tells him that he had a breakthrough at the poetry night. Edgar mentions the Christmas Eve party and Sofia asks Dash to go with her. It’s all coming full circle for these characters.

Dash & Lily season 1, episode 5 ups the stakes in the story as the lead characters find themselves in new predicaments which complicates their notebook game somewhat. This is suddenly not a simple, straightforward, soppy Christmas romance.
