There’s a very melancholy note to the opening of Sweet Home episode 9, the penultimate installment, as all the Green Home residents gather to say farewell to Jae-heon. Ji-su is taking his death particularly hard. Eun-yu insists she’s going to survive with her until the end and gives her the hilt of Jae-heon’s broken sword. Sang-wook also toasts him.
But there are more pressing matters to attend to — namely, an armored vehicle is racing toward Green Home. It crashes straight into the front of the building and plain-clothes outlaws spill from it, immediately stabbing and eventually executing the runaway soldier. They begin rounding everyone up. Once they’re gathered, one of the men draws a red circle around everyone and informs them it’s their prison — to prove the point, Ji-eun is shot for being outside it.
The man in charge of the outlaws is Jung-seop. He’s not a nice chap. But he’s right when he says that humans are a more dangerous threat than monsters — at least at the present moment. Eun-hyeok believes they just need to buy time until an opportunity presents itself, especially with Yi-kyung and Sang-wook still roaming free. To prove his point, they kill a couple of the outlaws and take their weapons.
Those two also hook up with Su-yeong, who has been hiding in the vents and has befriended a helpful goo monster. Elsewhere, Jung-seop executes Seon-yeong.
The tables turn quickly. Sang-wook and Yi-kyung launch a surprise attack that gives all the residents time to fight back, and when it looks like Jung-seop might be getting a handle on things, a newly monsterized Seong-yeon arrives and impales Hyun-su — in return, he throttles her. Jung-seop orders Seong-yeong to be burned and drags Hyun-su into an elevator with several of his men, while Yu-ri and Ji-su kill an especially unpleasant outlaw who tries to rape them. Yi-kyung is able to rescue the others, even if she takes a beating while doing so (she’s careful to protect the baby.)
On the roof, Jung-seop and his right-hand man try to decide what to do with a newly resurrected Hyun-su. But out of nowhere, he’s killed by one of his own men, who evidently has powers. As he introduces himself to Hyun-su, a helicopter flies overhead dropping Special Infectee report guides. Downstairs, another of Jung-seop’s men explains what these are — guarantees that anyone who reports a special infectee will be taken to a safe place. Can Hyun-su trust his so-called friends not to turn him in?
