Summary
“Head Rush” lulls the audience into boredom as the plot gets silly and the characters change their minds more than they change their socks.
This recap of Netflix’s Zero Chill season 1, episode 6, “Head Rush”, contains spoilers.
This series most certainly goes through phases of showing promise and then diving into mediocrity, and this is certainly one of those episodes.
“Head Rush” begins with Sky’s fall on the ice; she ends up in the hospital, and she wakes up to her mother, Holly, looking over. Sky doesn’t think she has anything to worry about, but her mother wants to go through all the tests. Mac tells Kayla that it’s her fault, and the siblings argue again.
The team needs to be better
Anton Hammarstrom tells the team that their performance was not good enough (in a charity match!) — he wants them to prove that they want to be part of this team, or they are finished. Despite Anton’s speech, Mac is fretting about Sky. Ava asks her father if she can play hockey, but Anton says no. Eventually, her father gives in and lets Ava on the ice — he puts her in goal. He asks each player to try and score against her.
Holly isn’t happy with Sky
Kayla asks if she can see Sky at the hospital, but Holly tells her she’s done enough, implying that it was her fault that she collapsed on the ice. When Holly returns to Sky, she doesn’t make her aware that Kayla has visited. Kayla tries to sneak into Sky’s room anyway by pretending to be one of the hospital cleaners. She ends up having to clean up in the children’s ward, and it becomes a silly subplot of her working for the hospital. Eventually, her mother captures her and tells her that she needs to respect Holly’s wishes.
A puck in the head
Mac tries to score against Ava, but she keeps saving it. Anton asks him to keep shooting, but he misses. In his final shot on an open goal, the puck rebounds off the post and hits him in the head. His father takes him to the hospital. Mac ends up next to Sky when he gets there. Meanwhile, Anton tells Ava that she can be on the team.
Holly agrees that Sky should skate
Mac tells Sky that he feels guilty as he let Jacob go, and then she got hurt by heading on to the ice — he seems to be guilty over nothing here. Sky says it’s the best thing that could have happened because people are always scared for her. Sky believes Kayla didn’t visit her, but Mac tells her his sister did come. She realizes that her mother has lied. Meanwhile, Kayla tells Holly that Sky needs to skate. Holly agrees, and the pair hug. These characters change their emotions super quickly.
The ending
Mac and Sky hang out in the park, and as they are about to kiss, they are distracted by nearby children. They decide to play with the kids in the park, and Mac makes an admission — hockey doesn’t make him happy anymore, and he thinks he should quit. Imagine taking your son halfway across the world for his “dreams” for him to then want to quit.
