Summary
U Data proves harder to take down than expected, and Go Eun remains AWOL, but revenge seems right around the corner.
This recap of Taxi Driver season 1, episode 7 contains spoilers.
Following last week’s cliff-hanger ending, it only makes sense that Taxi Driver episode 7 opens up with some context for Go Eun and her sister, Jung Eun, whose involvement in revenge porn drove her to suicide – something that, as we learn later, loops right back around to the still on-going case with U-Data. It’s all the more motivation for Rainbow to take this miserable company down once and for all, but that will presumably take place in tomorrow’s episode. The slightly longer-than-usual arc here runs the risk of letting the drama go off-boil, but between Go Eun’s personal involvement and the lengths that Ha-Na is obviously willing to go to, there’s definitely enough meat on the story to fill up one more installment.
There’s lots to be said about the nature of viral video in Taxi Driver episode 7, and how inescapably damaging “leaks”, accidental or otherwise, can be for the victims. The public humiliation. The broken trust. The sheer inability to stop the spread. In one early scene, Jung Eun frantically scours the internet until her fingers bleed all over the trackpad. Later, Sung-Chul puts it succinctly when he implores Do-Ki to wipe every video from U-Data’s server – “Every single one is a life.”
Of course, Do-Ki is newly energized by this development, and Ha-Na is still on the case, though for different reasons (things are also still testy between the two of them.) Among this, there’s also the subplot involving Do-Chul’s bloody escape from captivity, which left several of Chairman Baek’s goons injured and might have also endangered Sung-Chul given his card was in one of their stolen wallets. Having this much to be getting on with is what stops the plot from sagging.
Taxi Driver season 1, episode 7 only darkens an already grim story by revealing that Jung Eun’s boyfriend is actually part of the scheme at U Data, and wasn’t just a willing participant but also has another victim lined up. Chairman Park is sickeningly eager to exploit Jung Eun’s suicide for even more clicks, but the least Do-Ki can do is attend the next exploitative video shoot and beat down everyone there.
It seems like Rainbow is making some progress when Do-Ki deletes all the videos from the server, but they come back online basically immediately. It seems U Data has them stored off-site somewhere, which means that his actions, and Ha-Na’s search warrant, both amount to nothing. Do-Ki is at least able to maintain his cover with the Chairman, but it’s going to require more to take the company down.
Taxi Driver episode 7 ends with something of a cliffhanger, as a high-speed chase ensues, with the Chairman’s men trying to take out Ha-Na to put a stop to her meddling. Do-Ki is on the road in his taxi, so he’s bound to intervene, but the outcome is saved for tomorrow’s episode. Hopefully, that will mark the end of U Data.
