Summary

Is The Ice Road as good as Taken or Unknown? No. But at least it is not as cheesy as Neeson’s previous effort, Honest Thief.

This article contains no spoilers for The Ice Road (2021) – the action film is now streaming on Amazon Prime for UK viewers and Netflix for everywhere else.

In the latest action film from Liam Neeson, he plays an ice road driver. His mission in the movie? To rescue a group of trapped miners by leading a rescue mission over a frozen ocean. From the get-go, it’s evident that the film will be similar to many of Liam Neeson’s previous action films

Leading the cast of The Ice Road is, of course, Liam Neeson, alongside Laurence Fishburne, Amber Midthunder, Benjamin Walker, and Marcus Thomas. They all play a good role, but like the film itself, there is little that makes them stand out.

After the initial explosion in the opening minutes, there’s little to draw the audience in. Around the 35 minute mark, the pace picks up ever so slightly, and the stakes prove themselves. But even after this, the film doesn’t make its mark, and audiences may find themselves scrolling on their phone for much of the duration of the film.

For those that watched Ice Road Truckers (2007-2017); on the History Channel or Channel 5 in the UK, it may be best to watch an episode of that, as opposed to The Ice Road. The whole premise of the film is whether Mike (played by Liam Neeson) will be able to save the trapped miners. Although as the film progresses, it becomes hard to care whether he succeeds in doing so.

Despite being about the dangers of ice roads, this is nothing more than a middle-of-the-road film that may easily slip through the audience’s memory once the credits have finished rolling.
