Summary

Simply put, “Am I…? Maybe this Quiz Will Tell Me” is unquestionably one of this season and the series’ best.

This recap of Amazon Original Modern Love season 2, episode 5, “Am I…? Maybe This Quiz Will Tell Me”,” contains spoilers.

Whether it be from Cosmopolitan or Buzzfeed, at some point in life, we’ve all put ourselves at the mercy of a silly online quiz. Maybe we wanted to find out how great in bed we were or which Guardians of the Galaxy character we related to the most. When we’re adults, those things are leisurely. As we come to see in the fifth episode of Modern Love’s second season, as kids, they can make or break you.

Modern Love season 2, episode 5 recap

“Am I…? Maybe this Quiz Will Tell Me” follows Katie (Lulu Wilson), a middle-schooler who is curious in every sense of the word. When we first meet her, she’s taking a quiz to try and determine if and where she falls on the LGBTQ+ spectrum. The first few times, she “fails” though.

Despite not fitting into where she thinks she belongs, she finds herself strangely drawn to a local girl from her school named Alexa (Grace Edwards). The two eventually become close friends, but at an overnight event held at their school Katie feels compelled to kiss Lucy, and that changes everything… or so Katie thinks.

This episode is easily tied for my favorite of the season. Not only because it captures the innocence and beauty of young love, despite what some might consider the controversial subject matter. Love is love no matter who it is, and I just love the fact that this episode is unapologetic in its depiction of what it’s like to be both curious and unsure of who and what you like.

Additionally, halfway through, the episode becomes a straight-up thriller. While I could see some arguing that the shift in tone is distracting, it’s effective at elevating the stakes for both of our lead characters and making us feel scared for them.

From its (quite literally) questionable opening to its satisfyingly unsure ending, I think this episode is the perfect embodiment of modern love. It’s confusing, it’s scary, it’s awkward, and depending on if you end up with the person you desire, it’s perfect.
