Summary

“Queen Anne’s Revenge” leaves the first season of Dive Club on a massive cliffhanger, though whether or not anyone will care is another matter entirely.

This recap of Dive Club season 1, episode 12, “Queen Anne’s Revenge”, contains spoilers, including a discussion of the Dive Club ending. You can check out our spoiler-free season review by clicking these words.

Of course, it doesn’t end! That’s simply the way of things these days, and if Dive Club is able to finesse a second season by turning into Pirates of the Caribbean in its final moments then, well, why not? Little it has done throughout its freshman outing has made much of a splash, so leaving the girls imperilled by not just a nasty-looking storm but also the descendants of a fearsome pirate will just have to do.

Dive Club season 1, episode 12 recap

Anyway, “Queen Anne’s Revenge” begins where the penultimate episode left off, with the girls hustling towards the lighthouse after spotting Lauren’s Morse Code SOS call. Lo and behold, she’s there! It’s hugs and giggles all around, and everyone is very happy to see everyone else, at least until they’re interrupted by a mysterious hooded figure whom they’re quickly able to jump and flee from. But they reason that he’s probably after whatever that mysterious key unlocks, which turns out to be the only mausoleum in the Cape Mercy cemetery.

The mausoleum’s epitaph turns out to be an anagram of Princess Anastasia, tying in the reveal about Anna’s heritage. This, then, is supposedly the tomb of Anna’s great-grandmother, who apparently wasn’t killed by the Bolsheviks during the Russian Revolution but escaped to Cape Mercy, being pursued all the while by the fiery red-haired captain of the Nemesis, who eventually killed her and took her place. This expositional dialogue — Anna translates Anastasia’s diary — ties together the treasure hunt for the Russian jewels that has comprised most of the season, and allows for some flashback action and a few revelations. One is that Anastasia was buried in secret by her subjects and that the sapphire crown, the only remaining valuable unaccounted for, was hidden in her dress. Another is that Anastasia had no legitimate heirs, so Anna isn’t in fact a descendent of her, but of the pirate who took her place.

Anna doesn’t take this news well and ends up burning down the clubhouse on the jetty as the girls find themselves out at sea in a little rowboat just as both a storm and the Volkov yacht roll in. Aboard is Hayden and Anna’s babushka, Viktorya (Kate Peters), who has turned full heel now and is babbling about her piratical ancestors and the missing jewels. Things don’t end well for the girls, then, who are bound aboard the boat and left to the mercy of the storm, as lightning begins to fork through the sky.
