The Morning Show season 2, episode 1 recap
The first episode of season 2 is the aftermath of the recent scandal where Bradley and Alex unified on air. Social media are going crazy. Alex and Hannah are fretting, wondering how UBA is going to react. Meanwhile, Cory is furious that he has been fired, and Fred has not. He tells the board that if they do not come to their senses, the show will die. He always deals in absolutes. The series then shows life in the city under covid-19—a ghost town with quarantines.
Episode 1 then moves to three months earlier, in December 2019. Bradley is enjoying hosting The Morning how with Eric — they are anticipating New Year’s Eve. Rumors are quickly spreading that there’s an allegation against Ray Marcus for emotional abuse. Nothing has changed — the consequences of Mitch are still ongoing.
UBA also has a problem; ratings have not been great with Bradley, and Cory wants to shortlist who pairs with her. Mia asks Cory to put Bradley on the evening news, as it’s her thing. But Cory brings the topic of bringing Alex back, but the board rejects that idea, stating that she is done. Meanwhile, Alex looks to be enjoying life in Maine, writing her own book. However, her publishing agent tells her to go deeper with the book and talk about Mitch — the agent knows Mitch will sell copies. Alex is emotional and frustrated with that request — despite leaving The Morning Show, it’s not really left her.
Bradley speaks to Cory, and she wants to know who is replacing Ray for the evening news and puts herself forward. She explains that Cory got his job back because of her, so he owes her. However, Cory does not want to move her and decides to charm her instead.
Cory clearly has a plan to save ratings. He visits Alex in Maine and asks her to come back for a year — he highlights how Bradley is struggling and wants Alex to be part of the resurgence. Alex insists she’s happy and declines. Later on, at a New Year’s Eve party, Alex sits with a tarot reader who senses she is carrying a “paralyzing amount of guilt” — she thinks she’s running away from something. It’s clear at this point that Alex is not as happy as she appears.
The ending
For the network, Bradley hosts the New Year’s Eve coverage with Eric. She’s truly appreciative of her partnership with him. However, during the night, Eric tells Bradley he’s leaving the morning slow and joining evening news — everyone knew apart from Bradley. She angrily confronts Cory about it, and they argue intensely.
Feeling desperate to get Alex back, Cory had left Alex a voice mail telling her that her greatest work is yet to come — this hits Alex, and she feels emotional. As the countdown to the New Year begins, Alex rings Cory, and Cory asks her to fill in for Eric until her new primetime show. Alex wants to know if she can trust him.
But more trouble is afoot — as the episode ends, news reports highlight how Hannah’s family will be filing a lawsuit against UBA.
