Last week’s episode felt like an unfortunate segway — a slump in the series, if you will. Thankfully, the series is back in episode 6 as it feels like it is back to its best. There’s a lot of rave regarding this series on Twitter, but just because it has the cast does not mean it doesn’t deserve the same critique as other series.

Only Murders in the Building season 1, episode 6 recap

Episode 6 opens up with Detective Williams, who closed the case on Tim Kono and signed it off as suicide. She speaks to her partner, and they are having a baby. She becomes frustrated when she learns her partner listens to the podcast. Podcasts are made to be addictive after all — they reel you in.

Meanwhile, our podcasters are looking at the jewelry found in Tim’s apartment. Apparently, he may have got it from a person known as Angel. But they cannot investigate for long, as Mabel’s mother shows up at the tattoo parlor, and she’s pissed. Charles and Oliver join Mabel and her mother for dinner; Mabel’s mother wonders why her daughter is still interested in Tim after what he did to Oscar. That’s when Charles reveals to the mother that they are doing a true-crime podcast on Tim Kono’s murder. The mother sternly tells Mabel that she’s trapped in the past.

The mother clarifies that she has a problem with Charles and Oliver doing a podcast with her daughter — she regrets letting Mabel spend time at that apartment — she asks the men to let her be. Mabel feels her mother is right and drops from the podcast team. When Charles and Oliver return to the apartment, Charles raises that they must stop the podcast because it’s too personal for Mabel. However, their sponsor, Teddy, wants to offer funding for the podcast after the famous podcaster Cynthia talks about them on primetime television, sparking popularity overnight.

As for Detective William, she learns that the toxicology reports never made it to the investigation, and there’s other missing evidence regarding Tim Kono. She tells her partner but expresses the fact that she cannot get involved in a closed case. However, she starts listening to the podcast.

Mabel and Oscar look at a piece of evidence that shows Zoe’s ring on her body, but they know that she never had the ring on her when she died, so it doesn’t make sense. Oscar raises how he doesn’t want to talk about death and tells Mabel he has been thinking about her a lot. Mabel admits that she waited for him. They kiss each other, solidifying a romance. Later on, Mabel tells her mother that she needs to continue her investigation. Her mother is accepting this time.

The ending

As the episode draws nearer to the end, Charles and Oliver are buzzing over the podcast downloads. They both debate over the investment from the sponsor, but Oliver cannot rip the cheque. They then realize that the account on the cheque is “Angel Inc,” which could be linked to the investigation. Mabel returns to the apartment and apologizes for lying — she admits to struggling to trust people. She then reveals that someone left Tim Kono’s phone at the front desk. They feel it is possible that Teddy could be Angel, the person that Tim was in trouble with. Their sponsor is now their prime suspect!
