Summary

A true-crime docuseries that focuses on the case of missing German Birgit Meier, a photographer who went missing in 1989. The docuseries will be more than enjoyable for true-crime lovers. But be prepared to grow annoyed with the lack of interest from the legal system.

This review of the Netflix docuseries Dig Deeper: The Disappearance of Birgit Meier does not contain any spoilers.

First of all, what works in favor of Dig Deeper: The Disappearance of Birgit Meier is its run time. With just four episodes that are all around an hour-long, it’s a quick watch! The case at hand entails the disappearance of Birgit Meier, who went missing in 1989. And whilst it wasn’t until years later that the fate of Birgit came to light, does the true-crime series provide us with concrete answers? Watch and find out!

What makes the disappearance of photographer Birgit even more interesting is that, remarkably, when she originally went missing, there didn’t seem to be a huge level of concern. Despite the pleas of her family, the police department didn’t provide much focus on her case. There was talk that she may have gone to Mexico or committed suicide. But the police didn’t focus their resources on finding Birgit. Instead, it was her brother, Wolfgang Sielaff, who continued to ask the investigation. With seeingly no evidence linking Birgit to Mexico and her family saying that as she was a loving mother, she would not have committed suicide. Questions even arose that as she was getting a divorce, was that possibly a reason for her to go missing? Or could Birgit have become a victim of the Göhrde murders that the media were more focused on?

With little interest, Birgit’s family would hand out flyers and take out a missing-persons ad. Whatever they could do to make the public interested in the case, they did. But with more attention on the Göhrde murders, the disappearance of Birgit seemed to fly under the radar. So will there be any answers as to what happened to Bitgit? The series features interviews will all those with connections to the case. As a result, this provides heartbreaking first-hand experiences from the events that followed.

Whilst this is a highly entertaining watch, it’s also extremely infuriating. The torture that the family of Birgit must have gone through. Not only were they worried about Birgit, but it seemed that nobody in the law department even cared.  “We had the impression that our case was kind of secondary”. This feeling must have caused a lot more heartache to an already difficult situation. It truly is devastating and your heart goes out to the family whilst watching. Similar to Reasonable Doubt: A Tale of Two Kidnappings, this docuseries will expose the flaws within the system that should protect us.
