Lost in Space season 3, episode 5 recap

Episode 5 opens with a young Maureen looking out to space in a flashback — she dreams of going out there one day. It then flits to the present day, and Judy checks that her mother is okay after they crashed on a planet. The others are also finding their footing in different locations — all the characters are separated. Will confirms to Smith that SAR survived the crash. They aren’t out of dangerous waters yet.

Maureen has an issue right away — her seat rockets are still on; she’s basically sitting on a landmine. If she moves, she is dead. Maureen and Judy need to find a way to disarm the system. We are then treated to a brief flashback, and Maureen feels that she didn’t pass the training for an astronaut. She doesn’t want to stay on earth. Judy’s grandmother tells Maureen that there will be other missions, but she should enjoy her time with baby Judy. Suddenly in the present, Judy and Maureen’s ship is being swallowed by a massive sea monster. It’s one bad thing after the other, but with the flashbacks, there’s a sense that the mother and daughter have some unresolved issues. With the swallowing continuing, Maureen is defeatist, believing Judy will have to leave her.

As for Don, as he is chasing the chicken, he comes across a robot. However, the robot scans him first before knocking him out. The robot weirdly does not kill him.

Penny and John try and find Robot, knowing they need him to get off the planet. They find Robot on the Fortuna — he has been impaled, and they need to help him. They saw away at the metal that penetrated the Robot, but they have to do it quickly as they know the robots have tracked them. They manage to get Robot free.

As for Will, he wants his backpack that is stuck up on a tree, but Smith tells him it isn’t worth it. Will knows he has the ancient skull from the alien city in the bag and thinks it is important.

The ending

Judy has an idea; to make the sea monster vomit. While Judy does her thing, she tells Maureen that she has always been expected to be perfect because of her — she gets emotional and believes she took her mother’s career away to be an astronaut. Maureen had no idea her daughter felt that way, and she tears up, reassuring Judy that it’s not the case.  While emotions are high, Judy finds a containment box nearby. Maureen gets off her seat, and she jumps into the containment box with Judy as the rockets blow up. The sea monster then throws up. They both survived, and it brings them closer together, removing the tension from before.

Will continues to try and get his backpack while Smith helps from the bottom of the tree. The backpack falls off, but Robot catches it. Will is reunited with Penny, John, and Robot.

As the episode ends, Don is woken up by the chicken.
