Summary
“Mirror” kicks into a higher gear as the body count rises, and a literal ticking clock begins counting down.
This recap of Alex Rider season 2, episode 3, “Mirror”, contains spoilers.
There has been a lot of chatter about Damian Cray thus far in Alex Rider Season 2, but “Mirror” is the first time we really meet him. He’s basically a composite of Mark Zuckerberg, Cliff Bleszinski, and Elon Musk, a charismatic uber-wealthy tech bro who is adamant about changing the world in eight days’ time. That date coincides with the planned release of Feathered Serpent 2, but we know that’s not what he really means. Nevertheless, though, he’s all about publicity, so he wants to put together a live event in London where he can meet fans face-to-face and drum up hype for the release. You can feel everything coming together, can’t you?
Alex Rider season 2, episode 3 recap
This feeling only persists. With Byrne pushing Blunt and Mrs. Jones to track down Simon Marriott/Smoking Mirror after his escape, and Alex being adamant about saving people despite Jack’s warnings not to get involved, various plot points are being driven hastily together. Even Jack’s company is tasked with facilitating a local charity being absorbed into Cray’s foundation.
Simon, meanwhile, is hiding out in some hilarious hacker hotel that’s like a cyber-criminal youth club, a stay at which is paid for via the blockchain. “Mirror” is largely about the other characters trying to find his hidey-hole. Alex and Sabina go to Ed’s house and find his office tossed, all his files on Cray deleted, something that Simon himself watches and listens to by hacking into the webcam on a nearby laptop. Tom has footage of Alex whooping the agent outside Simon’s house, though, and thus footage of Simon escaping on his motorbike. Alex takes this to Smithers for help in running the plate, and while he takes some convincing, Smithers eventually agrees to do so without revealing where he got the information.
Simon, though, isn’t just going to sit around and wait to be caught. He sends a massive pizza delivery to Alex’s home and then sends all of the electronics in the place into a tailspin. Photos of Alex, Tom, and Jack appear on every nearby screen, and soon a warning pops up to leave all this alone. Alex, though, knows enough to leverage Simon, and the next day, the hacker calls him to arrange a meeting at a disused industrial hanger, which seems as good a site for murder as any other. Shortly after he leaves the hacker hotel to attend this meeting, Yassen arrives and kills everyone there.
And he isn’t far behind Simon himself, who, believing Alex to be an intelligence asset, wants to be brought in and protected in exchange for what he knows. Alex obviously couldn’t facilitate that if he wanted to, but as it turns out he doesn’t need to since Yassen arrives and shoots Simon dead. He opens fire on Alex, too, but he’s able to escape; Yassen recognizes him, and the shock buys Alex a few seconds to get away.
What we’re unsure of, at least for now, is what Cray is planning. He explains to the media that his brother Joe was a drug addict and that every sale of Feathered Serpent 2 will go to the War on Drugs — they’ll operate at a loss. And “Mirror” ends with him watching the timer to the game’s release tick down, as Alex does the same elsewhere. Somehow, all these pieces fit together. Luckily, we won’t have to wait long to find out how.
