You know the story of The Coyotes already – teens in the woods, illicit activities, drug use, and so on, and so forth. But the specifics of Netflix’s new Belgian original limited series are what make all the difference, or at least some difference, and the brief thriller is worthy of some cursory examination after the credits roll on the sixth and final episode.
Let’s lay out the context, though. The plot revolves around a group of Scouts discovering some diamonds, which leads to one calamity after another. It’s Kevin, the new boy and younger brother of Doberman, who discovers the booty in a cave while tripping on MDMA, but the responsibility is soon shared when he and Ferret return to the cave and discover the body of Toni, the boyfriend of the girl, Marie, who gave Kevin the psychedelics in the first place (he thought Toni was a mermaid). Marie is the daughter of Anne-Françoise, the owner of Camp Warnaffe. Toni was part of a ring with Marc Moyersoen tasked with moving the diamonds to Antwerp for Mrs. Kartash of the Sikh mafia. With all this in mind, taking the diamonds and then weighing down Toni’s body with rocks and dropping it into the lake seems extraordinarily ill-advised.
Later, after Toni’s body has resurfaced and then been hidden again, the rest of the Coyotes find out about the diamonds, and the decision is made to pawn them and split the dough. The mistake they make, though, is going to sell them in Antwerp, where one of the jewelers they visit works for Mrs. Kartash. Kevin is able to sell the diamonds, but the other Coyotes get attacked. After a lot of intimidation and intelligence-gathering back and forth between the different sides, Kevin actually betrays the Coyotes to try and flee with Marie and the money. But Marie has been kidnapped by Toni’s siblings, Dona, Freddo, and Angelo, who believe she masterminded the loss of the diamonds.
The Coyotes ending
Later, Kevin is forced to take Dona and Freddo to Toni’s decaying body, still hidden in the woods (the money is also hidden there now), but thanks to Marc convincing Amine to betray Mrs. Kartash, Dona and Freddo are killed and the Coyotes get to split the money. Marc and Amine later hold Doberman hostage, so Father Julek and the other Coyotes agree to negotiate for his release.
There’s a ton of death towards the end of The Coyotes. Amine kills Martine by breaking her neck; Marc is killed by a statue of Jesus; Amine is run over by a bus. But most of the kids, including Ferret, who is staved by Amine, survive with the help of Father Julek, who shields them from any comeback. Kevin and Doberman, both eager to free themselves from their abusive father, even decide to stay behind at Warnaffe, where Kevin can be with Marie, Marie can begin to process the discovery of Julek being her father, and the money that got so many people killed rests in the river, unclaimed, waiting for some fortunate (or unfortunate) passer-by to find it.
