Summary

“The Lion’s Den” forces Thony to make a difficult choice as Luca’s circumstances worsen.

This recap of The Cleaning Lady season 1, episode 2, “The Lion’s Den”, contains spoilers.

Two major things happen in “The Lion’s Den”, both of them bad news for Thony. The first is that Luca’s condition worsened and Thony ran out of antiviral medication; with his stem cell trials not due to start for another week, and the ER presenting the risk of deportation for them both, Thony was forced to take desperate measures in order to save Luca’s life. The second thing is that the FBI, or more specifically Special Agent Garrett Miller, begins to take an interest in Thony particularly, as we saw at the end of the premiere. The timing couldn’t be worse. Just as Thony needs to turn to Arman for help saving Luca, the Feds are taking note of everything she’s doing and who she’s associating with.

The Cleaning Lady season 1, episode 2 recap

Things aren’t great for Arman, either, since a weapons deal he’s negotiating with the Armenians is complicated by a truckload of the firearms going missing, leading to a brief shootout, the death of Arman’s friend Mateo, and a 24-hour deadline before even more blood is spilled.

Arman doesn’t really have time to help Thony, then, but he does it anyway since he just can’t help himself, which actually ends up helping him in a roundabout way. But more on that in a moment. The focus of “The Lion’s Den” is how the FBI uses the threat of deportation to strongarm the undocumented workers like Thony and Fi into playing ball, particularly regarding the location of a confidential informant named Theo. But Thony is wise to the tactics. While she calls out Garrett for exploiting already vulnerable people, she knows that she’s ultimately powerless in this dynamic, as well as almost every other dynamic. There’s no wonder she finds Arman and his gang compelling.

The stakes are raised somewhat when a tearful Fiona confesses to Thony that her son, Chris, is also undocumented, though he doesn’t know. He was born on the way to the U.S., not in the U.S., which explains why Fi couldn’t sign any official documentation relating to him. He does not take this news well, and while it seems like a bit of an overreaction on his part, this is basically an American teen having been protected from the harsher realities of his life by the hard work of his mother. He can’t empathize with her precisely because of the life that she has been able to give him, which is ironic when you think about it.

Thony turning to Arman for help doesn’t go unnoticed by Hayak, his employer, or indeed Garrett, who snaps a picture of Arman loading Luca, in his antiviral spacesuit, into the back of his car. Thankfully, Thony being able to identify the weapons thief gets her in Hayak’s good graces, although that might be bad news considering that he tends to believe once you’re “in”, you’re in for good. For Garrett, this is a blessing, since he decides to use the cozy arrangement to have Thony replace Theo as his CI inside Arman’s organization. After all, the hard work of getting inside has already been done. But one assumes that the real hard work is just beginning.
