Summary

Neymar: The Perfect Chaos is your standard run-of-the-mill documentary-type series. Created to provide a positive outlook on Neymar, this will be of more entertainment to fans of Neymar, as opposed to his critics.

This review of the Netflix limited series Neymar: The Perfect Chaos does not contain any spoilers.

29-year-old controversial football player Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior is the obvious focus of this three-part Netflix series. Those involved hope that the show will show the real Neymar da Silva Santos Júniorm and not just the character that the media have portrayed him out to be. In this documentary-type series, which features one-to-one interviews with Neymar, he details the highs and lows not only of his career but also those of his — what he describes as — chaotic personal life.

Viewed as one of the strongest football players of all time, Neymar has also faced his fair share of negative public opinion. There have been claims that there’s footage that shows Neymar racially abusing Hiroki Sakai, whilst there’s a well-known incident where Neymar hit Álvaro Gonzálezon on the back of the head, with Neymar receiving a two-month match ban as a result. In 2019, police in Brazil also charged a woman with perverting the course of justice after she accused Neymar of raping her.

Because of the constant negative media presence that surrounds Neymar, many football fans view him as a monster. Neymar: The Perfect Chaos even provides footage of football fans saying that they don’t like Neymar; “He does nothing”. One of the questions that the series begins with is, “So, is he a diva?”. But does the series answer that question?

Despite the series slating to show the public who Neymar really is, it doesn’t come close. Even with the use of home and personal interviews, Neymar: The Perfect Chaos does nothing more than highlight that the series has been created to put Neymar in a better light. Is this series likely to change the public opinion of Neymar? No. To be honest, I think a lot won’t even watch it. Sure, his fans will enjoy it. But for those that don’t exactly have the greatest opinion of Neymar, likely they won’t waste their time watching it.

Considering that Neymar has a net worth of over $200 million, it, however, won’t make much difference to him who likes him and who doesn’t. Honestly, it’s quite shocking that he’s gone through the trouble of making a documentary about himself.
