Summary

“Call Mads” thickens the main plot with some new developments, but also creates a lot of friction within the group.

This recap of Chosen season 1, episode 4, “Call Mads”, contains spoilers.

Emma is having a tough time of things. She felt entirely alone and discovered her boyfriend was cheating on her, then she made new friends and almost got killed by an alien. Now she has discovered a suspicious marble in the back of her neck, planted by a dead alien, and she has no idea what it is or what it does. Luckily, though, Mads might. Emma takes the orb to him, explains how she got it, and shows him how it works — primarily how it reacts to her blood. The reaction includes a blue glow and rhythmic vibrations, resonances that Mads is able to listen to, and track back to the old sawmill. But he’s still adamant that Emma has less involvement than she’d like, so she instead takes the marble herself and heads back to the spot where Lukas took her, looking for him.

Chosen season 1, episode 4 recap

Unfortunately for Emma, Mads follows her and kicks up a fuss. He thinks that Lukas is connected to Astraeus and he immediately rejects Emma’s theory that she might have been “chosen” specifically. She sulkily heads to work, where Astraeus forces her to have a “routine health check” for insurance purposes, which includes a blood test (all of this is filmed from outside the dirty plastic of the makeshift tents, which is a nicely dispassionate touch.)

Feeling spiteful, especially after her mother tells her that she’s planning on looking at new apartments for them in Copenhagen, Emma takes Marie and Frederik to the sawmill against Mads’s wishes. Frederik once again does his impulsive “I’ll check it out” routine, leaving Emma and Marie alone in the car, which is awkward when the latter comes onto her again. Looks like we’ve got a love triangle on our hands. Trying to avoid the situation, she goes to look for Frederik, leaving Marie alone to be accosted by one of the locals. It turns out Fred has been nabbed, too. Emma once again finds herself alone, wandering into a nearby barn where she finds a giant version of the orb in her pocket, which is going haywire because of the proximity. When she hides from another curious local, she stumbles on Hans’s ruined body, which is now connected to the giant orb. Is this the organism? The nexus point for the shared hive mind? I’m just speculating.

Emma is able to cause a distraction which buys Frederik and Marie time to flee, but they leave Emma behind, believing she left them behind. Mads tries to push this idea, then he tells Marie and Frederik that Emma slept with them both in a super petty development. Emma returns right when Mads is explaining to everyone how unimportant she is, and she’s so annoyed by him that she claims not to have seen anything at the sawmill.

Down at the docks, Emma is pursued by the man from the sawmill and saved just in time by Lukas, who demands to see what she has found. Upon seeing it, he asks who she is, and Emma responds that she’s trying to figure that out for herself, just in case the show’s rather obvious theme wasn’t clear by now.
