Summary

The entirety of Hyosan is imperilled as politics threatens to undo the all the students’ hard work.

This recap of All of Us Are Dead season 1, episode 10 contains spoilers.

Things get awkward quickly in this episode. After Cheong-san was finally reunited with his mother, it takes only seconds for the other students to start stoving her head in with pipes right in front of him. After that, Hyo-ryeong collapses and is abandoned by Ji-min, forcing Wu-jin to double back and rescue her. This, though, finally reunites Ha-ri with her brother (this is why Dae-su has been calling him “step-brother” all season — he likes Ha-ri), so at least that’s a positive takeaway.

It’s the only one, though. When the students enter the gym, they’re accosted by a bunch of zombies, Ji-min is bitten (and not turned into a super zombie, weirdly), and Ha-ri’s archery buddy is forced to flee. The students are drenched, stuck, and have been worn down to almost nothing by everything they have experienced. Just in time, Mr. Lee’s voiceover returns once again to tell everyone, particularly those watching at Martial Law Command, that there’s no way to create a vaccine for the Jonas Virus. The only thing to do is to incinerate the infected and ensure no cells remain. It’s looking very much like Hyosan might be a complete write-off. The Commander is willing to establish a blockade, but the second it’s penetrated, Hyosan will be abandoned. Amidst all this political turmoil, the party leader arrives at the quarantine zone to force Assemblywoman Park to step down.

For some reason, All of Us Are Dead sees this as the perfect opportunity for even more bonding, though it does admittedly deliver a funny scene when Dae-su confesses his feelings to Ha-ri and she literally lays into him out of frustration. But this devolves into petty bickering between the juniors and seniors, and Nam-ra leads a literal vote over how best to proceed. Surely now isn’t the time?

Speaking of which, the quarantine Commander receives a double dose of bad news — first, an expert confirms what Mr. Lee said about a vaccine for this virus being basically impossible to create, and second, he receives word that the infected have broken down the barricade keeping them in Hyosan. Military intelligence delivers more bad news to the Commander — if a single infected person gets out of Hyosan, the entirety of Korea will fall. Thus, he orders that the whole place be bombed, which really makes you wonder how all of this can be thwarted in time for the finale.

Anyway, after much back and forth, the kids decide to use the equipment carts in the gym’s storage room as a moving shield to get back out. It’s not a terrible idea, really, but it’s certainly not foolproof, as evidenced by Joon-yeong getting bitten. Living up to his claim of taking responsibility if anything goes wrong, he leaps the barricade and helps to push from the outside, getting eaten all the while. It’s a brave decision, and his sacrifice is able to buy everyone else enough time to get out. When they get to the doors, though, they find them chained and padlocked — in the nick of time, So-ju opens the door and comes face to face with his daughter.
