Summary
The Vox Machina ruin a banquet in truly hilarious fashion as they battle a new nemesis.
This recap of Amazon’s The Legend Of Vox Machina season 1, episode 3, “The Feast Of Realms,” contains spoilers.
Two new characters joined the already hefty cast at the end of episode 2: Sylas Briarwood (voiced by creator Matthew Mercer) and his wife Lady Delilah. These royal additions are accompanied by sinister music as they ride on into town and it isn’t long before Sylas demonstrates his superhuman strength by punching straight through a man’s chest. They’re integral to the third episode and the catalyst for where the entire story is heading. The first two episodes acted as a kind of action-packed introduction to The Legend Of Vox Machina world, but now the filmmakers have a plan for the rest of the series and I’m all in.
The Legend Of Vox Machina season 1, episode 3 recap
Having killed the dragon, the Vox Machina are rewarded with their very own extravagant dwelling and we find the gang midway through their breakfast, looking right at home. Grog and Vax play a light-hearted game of ball tag (yes, of course it’s rude) and Lady Allura invites them all to an important banquet. The dinner will be hosted by Sovereign Uriel with dignitaries from across the realm in attendance. Percy is excited for a night of etiquette and dignity, but as another round of ball tag begins it seems the crew will undoubtedly embarrass him at every turn.
The mercenaries get dressed up for this elaborate meal. Scanlan sports what can only be described as a shiny, rainbow codpiece to hilarious effect. It’s these little touches that really make this a joyous show to watch. Grog and Pike waste no time in getting drunk, whilst Scanlan offends all in his path. The Briarwood’s are formally introduced to the other party guests and it is clear from the off that Percy has some extreme grievances with the ruthless couple. Revenge is the word of the day. The crew plot their next move and Vax (with the help of his one-eyed snake – yes, really) goes investigating.
The juxtaposition between the crude Vox Machina and this elegant banquet, full of highbrow diplomats, makes for some great comedy. Throw in another Scanlan dance number and now you’re really cooking. He distracts the party with his raunchiest song yet and his iconic codpiece come disco ball. Whilst the gnome gets his groove on, the gang fight their latest rivals.
In the previous episode, the action was slightly lacking and predictable at times, here we have real stakes and the tension ratchets up a notch. Sylas and Delilah are worthy adversaries with godly powers. The Vox Machina attack with riotous aggression yet work together as a compassionate team too. This feels like a commendable payoff and the series is back on fine form. Another truly comical and engaging episode, with countless laugh-out-loud moments and the best fight scenes so far.
