Who is Douglas in The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window?
The former husband of Anna, Douglas, had a daughter with her. That daughter, Elizabeth, was unfortunately murdered and then eaten by a serial killer, Massacre Mike. Douglas blames himself for the death, as Elizabeth died during a “take your daughter to work day”. As Douglas is a forensic psychiatrist for the FBI specializing in serial killers, a small accident meant that Elizabeth was left alone in a room with Massacre Mike. Due to a few errors, Douglas was unable to renter the room and save her.
Whilst Douglas and Anna ultimately split up, he still cares for her deeply. This is evident as he continues to help Anna recover from the trauma of Elizabeth’s death as he poses as her therapist. He has full faith in Anna, and never once considers that she could be the one responsible for Lisa’s death.
Douglas appears to be a believer in second chances. Although one of his patients, Buell, murdered his entire family, Douglas still decides to hire him to work at his home. Seemingly trusting Buell enough to be around his wife and daughter.
What does Douglas do?
When the series begins, Douglas has separated from Anna. Even so, he still keeps in regular contact with Anna and will often drop other engagements to ensure she’s ok. When Anna messages him for bread, he comes around despite it being nighttime. And despite finding the request odd, he tells Anna that he wants her to be happy.
Once Anna finds herself the prime suspect in Lisa’s murder, she calls her therapist. Unaware that it’s actually Douglas, Anna talks to Douglas, who convinces her to make her way up into the attic. As he continues to listen to Anna, he learns (alongside Anna) that Buell has been living in the attic. Then when Anna decides to “save” Neil and Emma, Douglas stops what he is doing at work and rushes to help her. Ultimately, he is there for Anna just after she kills Emma.
At the conclusion of The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window, Douglas has got back together with Anna. They have had another child.
