The protagonist of the series, Andy Oliver, is seen as the audience’s eyes and ears, the equilibrium amongst all the chaos. Andy’s integrity is never tested, she remains honorable and decent throughout all eight episodes. She is the moral justice amid all the double-crossing and backstabbing. The kind of character you can’t help but root for. But why is she hurled into this sinister world and how does it change her?
Who is Andy Oliver in Pieces Of Her season 1?
At the start of the series, Andy is a 911 call operator with dreams of becoming an artist. Her day job bores her and she struggles to find any real motivation to switch careers. Mother Laura takes her out for her thirtieth birthday and questions Andy (Bella Heathcote) on her depressive mood and lack of purpose in life. Laura wants the best for her daughter, but can’t seem to address the issue in a more subtle way. Andy deflects the conversation onto the topic of her dead father, but a more serious disruption is about to occur.
The diner shooting that follows displays a cowardly Andy, whilst revealing a more disturbing side to Laura. This is the catalyst for the show, sending Andy on an adventure of discovery, as she uncovers the many secrets in Laura’s past. Additionally, this twist throws Andy headfirst into a world of espionage and danger. Andy must find hidden strength and transform into the fighter she was born to be. Through her sleuthing, Andy takes on disguises, questions criminals, and chases killers. Her character arc is very clearly defined, she starts as a coward and ends as a brave, new individual.
Along the way, Andy suffers from a wave of emotions. Each new revelation sends her over the edge, as she becomes a nervous wreck. It is only when she is fully broken that a more confident if unhinged aspect of Andy comes to the forefront. She battles criminals in a carefree, aggressive manner. Always seeking the truth and justice. Andy manages to figure out the whole dastardly plot and finds out her real father is the fugitive Nick Harp. They meet at the concluding showdown, where he is finally arrested.
Andy is taken on a rollercoaster ride of emotions throughout the series. She starts off as a timid nobody and ends as a brave, confident woman. She discovers all the truths that were hidden from her, who her real father was and why she has such a foggy memory of her upbringing. Andy suffers greatly, yet finds peace in the end. As she struggles back to normality Andy is comforted by a romantic interest and a mother who cares for her deeply.
