Summary
A string of coincidences really begin to weigh down a show happy to maintain its ruse.
This recap of Business Proposal season 1, episode 6 contains spoilers.
Here, I think Business Proposal has reached a point where you either like it or you don’t. You’re either on-board with the contrivances, slightly slapstick blunders, and pretty arch character development, or you’re not. The actors have won you over, or they haven’t. Of course, you can say the same kind of thing about a lot of shows, but the difference here, I think, is that Business Proposal seems content to be this, and exactly this, throughout the rest of its run, without ever really changing its tone or style, or going out of its way to be more careful with its writing and plotting.
Business Proposal season 1, episode 6 recap
This is only a bad thing if you’re one of those people – and I think I may be among their number – who just haven’t bought in. If you’re on-board, then you’re in luck with an episode like this, which is essentially just a flurry of contrivances designed to set up some slightly new character dynamics.
With Tae-moo and Ha-ri both now aware of the deception, and aware that the other knows about it, focus shifts initially onto Young-seo’s stalker, Shin Jeong-u, whom Tae-moo comes down on like a ton of bricks. But it doesn’t take long for things to drift back to Tae-moo’s non-contractual feelings for Ha-ri, which he also fears may not be reciprocated.
But then we begin to see how we’re moving forwards with this dynamic, and it was a bit sigh-inducing for me. At a dinner with Ha-ri and several of her friends, Young-seo insists that Ha-ri has a boyfriend, and when Min-woo presses, she says it’s the guy she went to the concert with. So, we’re in a predicament where Ha-ri and Tae-moo get to keep pretending while also falling deeper for one another and getting involved in slapstick scrapes. There’s one in a cinema here that sees Tae-moo crawling out of the theatre on his hands and knees.
He isn’t deterred, though. He invites her on a business trip, they go to the beach, and when they return we get snippets of Tae-moo losing his parents in a rainy car crash. He drops Ha-ri off during his panic, and she wanders right into all her friends, who want to meet her boyfriend, and of course, Tae-moo appears in the nick of time and introduces himself as such. It’s an incredibly unlikely string of events, the kind of thing you simply have to roll with. Whether or not you’ll want to, though, is another matter.
