This recap of HBO Max series Minx season 1, episode 1 contains spoilers.

Minx is a brand new show coming to HBO Max set in Los Angeles in the 70s, where a young woman is trying to create the first erotic magazine for women. While the show has been said to be based on a true story, the show’s creators have not confirmed whether or not it is true.

Minx season 1, episode 1 recap

The show kicks off seeing Joyce (Ophelia Lovibond) dreaming of accepting the Pultizer Prize when she walks by a man on a construction site screaming, “Show me your t**s.” She confronts him with the idea that times have changed where catcalling is not allowed anymore.

Joyce is on her way to a convention where they pitch a magazine idea to people for it to get purchased. As she is waiting to be let in, a charming and yet handsome man, Doug (Jake Johnson), interrupts her to chat her up. While they chat, she mentions she’s been creating this magazine for years and he hands her his card and says pitch me inside.

As we see Joyce head into the show, she makes her first pitch to introduce The Matriarchy Awakens. This feminist-driven magazine highlights women differently than other successful women’s magazines. But unfortunately, every person she pitches looks at her like she is nuts and she’s shunned. She stumbles across Doug one more time, who gives her advice she refuses to listen to on her way out of the convention.

Between fighting with her husband about the magazine to working for a magazine company she hates, Joyce is struggling. Then, while she is on the phone at work, Doug arrives randomly to whisk her away for a bite and possibly a pitch?

Doug offers Joyce the opportunity to broaden her magazine with some suggestions, including adding nude men. She is obviously uncertain of the idea but more uncertain of Doug. Upon showing up to Doug’s, things aren’t going as planned, but ultimately, Joyce gives the reigns to trust Doug and his plan. However, as things start to come together for the magazine, Joyce realizes that the plan is going in the opposite direction of what she wants and quits working with Doug.

The ending

As the new edition of Cosmo hits the newsstands with Burt Reynolds posed in the centerfold, Joyce begins to realize that Doug might be right after all. She visits Doug at his house and pleads with him to put the magazine back on track to be published. We see Joyce and Doug back together shooting their first centerfold for their magazine. They both aren’t sure what to name the magazine because The Matriarchy Awakens isn’t attractive enough for what they are selling. We see the camera pan to Joyce designing something and as it zooms in, we see the title ‘Minx.’
