Summary

“Au revoir, le double dong” is a huge step up from the pilot as Jack Johnson and Ophelia Lovibond continue to shine.

This recap of HBO Max series Minx season 1, episode 2 contains spoilers.

After the last episode, where we saw Joyce and Doug finally come to terms on what they had in mind for the magazine, it will be interesting to see if their partnership can continue. We know there are other pieces of the puzzle that are going to factor into this story, will Joyce being around affect those working with Doug? Will she be worth the hassle?

Minx season 1, episode 2 recap

The episode begins with Bambi (Jessica Lowe) questioning everything that is happening on the photoshoot set, which stems from the powerful presence of Joyce. Next, we see Doug and Joyce go on a selling spree as they need to get ads for the upcoming release of their magazine.

As expected, Joyce is struggling with the ads they are selling for the magazine. She wants to bring the bigger picture to the magazine, while Doug just wants to sell ads to make money. The ads are coming in because the advertisers loved Joyce, but she still struggles with what they are putting in the magazines.

Joyce is out for questions, so she goes to her sister Shelly to find out what she thinks of the magazine. Upon eating lunch at the golf course, she stumbles across the idea of hounding people at the course for advice on how to become an ad-seller. Joyce lands an advertising meeting with someone at the golf club and while Doug isn’t happy with it, he is going because Joyce needs him to and he likes money.

I will admit the dynamic between Jake Johnson and Ophelia Lovibond is the show’s heartbeat. I love the way they play off each other in a way that makes it fun while at the same time competitive in these roles. I love Jake Johnson and he looks as if he is having the time of his life.

Upon showing up to the meeting, Joyce realizes that although the plan was her idea, the man in charge only wants to talk to Doug. But, of course, we know this was set in the 70s when men didn’t like doing business with Joyce, causing her to have a complete uproar. Doug closes the deal, but it comes with one request and that is one night with Bambi and Doug leaves it up to Joyce to close the deal.

Joyce calls out Mr. Irving for what he did to her when she played tennis and outed him for what he wanted to do to make a deal. He calls her out and says she should be glad her dad isn’t around to see this and she socks him in the face.

The ending

Doug informs Joyce he was excited to find out that maybe real investors might have been buying ads in their magazine, but they aren’t there yet. He lets her know they need to work together to get to that point. As we know, Doug has struggled to come up with creative ads for the magazine for the sex toys, and he asks Joyce to lend a helping hand.

This leads to an eye-opening conversation between Joyce and Shelly, where she informs her that maybe she needs to explore with one of those toys to figure out how to open up a little.
