Summary
Feel-good film that takes the Disney formula and sprinkles some movie magic over a true life underdog story.
This review of the Netflix film Rescued by Ruby does not contain spoilers.
From the opening seconds this Netflix movie clearly has all the workings of a feel-good Disney film, your typical lazy afternoon, weekend watch. So get cosy and settle in, ready for a heartfelt biography about the real life story of a rescued canine and the state trooper who trained her. That famous pooch is none other than Ruby, a half border collie, and the police officer that found her is Daniel O’Neil, played by The Flash star Grant Gustin. Their journey into the headlines makes for a perfect family friendly viewing, especially aimed at you dog lovers out there.
We’re introduced to the adorable pup as she chases a skunk through the forest, with light piano music playing in the background. This, along with the picturesque scenery, has all the hallmarks of a standard Disney flick, but this drama is under the Netflix banner. Ruby is coaxed home by the smell of raw hot dog from her owner Pat Inman. Pat works at an animal shelter and our four-legged friend is up for adoption. Unfortunately, she has already trialled at seven homes and if the eighth one is a failure, like the rest, then she will have to be put down. Harsh truths for a kid’s film, but it certainly adds to the tension.
This is where our down-on-his-luck state trooper enters the scene. Dan works for the Rhode Island State Police, yet dreams of joining their K-9 Search and Rescue Team. He’s tried out for the unit on seven occasions, but has always been rejected due to his lack of focus and hyperactivity. Daniel struggled at school and is easily distracted, constantly playing with fidget toys. The head of the K-9 Unit, Matt Zarella, admires his determination, but explains how they can’t afford another dog to be assigned to him if he is to try out one final time. The German shepherds they use cost ten thousand dollars each. So, our plucky lead goes on the hunt for his very own dog.
It’s painfully clear where this is all heading and the predictability would normally be a negative, however this plot point actually works here at building unease until the two are finally united. Dan visits the local animal shelter and saves Ruby from termination. He adopts the collie and starts the strenuous task of training her up. Cue some fun montage sequences as Ruby is kicked out of obedience school and embarrasses Dan at the try outs, leading to some home schooling. There’s plenty of feel-good moments throughout this breezy watch that is sure to put a smile on your face.
Rescued by Ruby is a fun, family orientated drama, sure to please dog lovers the world over. This sweet story takes the underdog formula and milks it for all it’s worth. A heart-warming tale that highlights the simple joys in life, whilst pushing the positive work ethic on never giving up. I would recommend stocking up on some popcorn this weekend and setting some time aside for a lovely, laid back viewing.
